His cricketing prowess came to the fore during the Under-19 World Cup in 2014, where he showcased his talent by amassing over 250 runs in six matches. This stellar performance earned him recognition on the national stage, as he also featured prominently in the national team's campaign during the same tournament, impressing with a total of 265 runs in six innings.

The 2016-17 domestic season witnessed Samarawickrama's emergence as a formidable talent, compelling the selectors to take notice of his consistent performances. His debut for Sri Lanka A against England Lions was nothing short of spectacular, as he hammered an impressive 185 runs, further bolstering his case for national selection. After knocking on the doors of the selectors for a few years, Samarawickrama finally earned his international debut in 2017.

His Test debut came under unusual circumstances during Sri Lanka’s first-ever Day-Night Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi when Lahiru Thirimanne's injury paved the way for his inclusion in the team. Despite facing setbacks, Samarawickrama made intermittent appearances in Sri Lanka's limited-overs squads. His return to the Test squad after six years, for the series against Ireland in April 2023, marked a significant milestone in his career. During the first Test of the series, he notched his maiden Test century, becoming the first Sri Lankan wicketkeeper to achieve this feat since 2016.

In the T20I format, Samarawickrama has been granted an extended opportunity by the selectors since the beginning of 2024. His consistent performances, including two fifty-plus scores, secured his place in Sri Lanka's World Cup squad. As the squad composition takes shape, it remains to be seen where Samarawickrama fits in amidst the island nation's lineup.
