Renshaw can do no wrong - Australia came into Day 5 well ahead in the game and needing only 6 wickets for the win, but for a long while in the morning session, they seemed unable to find that killer blow to break through the stand between Markram and Mulder. Pat Cummins bowled a lovely spell but it was Josh Hazlewood who did get the job done later in the session, picking up his third wicket for the chase. Then Matt Renshaw yet again made use of his golden arm and made it two quick wickets for the Aussies. With two sessions and plenty of runs to play with, expect Australia to go for the jugular post Lunch. Markram holds the fort down - Right from the start of Day 5, Aiden Markram has looked in the zone, and for a long while, he had great support from Wiaan Mulder. The duo frustrated the Aussie bowlers and added 69 runs before Mulder fell and things derailed a bit. South Africa have also lost Kyle Verreynne since then, but Markram is standing his own. Currently on 60 off 200 balls, there are shades of Faf du Plessis' knock against Australia way back in 2005 in Adelaide, but Markram knows that there's still a long way to go.

LUNCH, DAY 5 - 9.47 am GMT - An engrossing session of Test cricket comes to an end, and after a fightback from South Africa, Australia actually head into Lunch in the ascendancy. Those two wickets in the second half of the session have now put Australia just 4 wickets away from the win.

DRINKS! Well, this has been a resolute first hour and ten minutes from the Proteas. Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder have looked fairly comfortable, and it's only been the odd delivery that has troubled them. Markram has a stellar record against Australia and also in the fourth innings, and he will be key for South Africa. Pat Cummins has rotated his bowlers throughout the session, and actually, he's been the most probing so far, but no clear-cut wicket-taking opportunity has been created yet. Australia will know that they need to stay patient and one wicket here could bring them a few more.

FOUR! Aiden Markram with a beauty of a shot. Cummins comes back from over the wicket and serves it wide of the off stump. Markram bends the right knee and smacks it past covers for a boundary.

That's a stellar change-up by Cummins. He brings out the surprise yorker, aiming it right at the toes. Aiden Markram does well to get the front foot enough out of the way to be able to jam it across to mid-wicket. There's an appeal for LBW, but the umpire turns it down.

Bowled from around the wicket, and Cummins immediately attacks the ribs. Markram just about manages to fend it down towards leg gully.

FOUR LEG BYES! Prodigious movement but the line is all wrong. Fuller one from wider on the crease, trying to attack the front pad but this one swings down the leg side. Mulder misses the flick and the ball goes off his pads to fine leg for a boundary.

That's a lovely comeback by Hazlewood. Pitched fuller on the fifth stump, shapes and then just holds its line a bit. Mulder plays at it but the ball zips past the outside edge.

Josh drifts onto the pads, and Mulder is able to flick it down to fine leg. Mitchell Starc runs to his right and slides across to stop the boundary and the batters get two runs. There is a quick check to see if Starc's feet made contact with the ropes when the ball was touching his hand, but it all seems fine.

FOUR! That's a confident-looking shot, and it brings up the 50-run stand between these two as well. Almost a half-volley, wide outside off, Mulder gets well forward and crunches the drive through covers for a boundary.

Full and straight, getting it to reverse a bit now. Markram gets onto the front foot and flicks it to deep square leg for one. A bit of oohs and aahs from the Aussie players as they thought this one would just slip past the inside edge.

Back to over the wicket for the final ball. Hammered in on a shorter length and angled into the batter, trying to bring short leg into play. Mulder does well to wait back and keep it down on the leg side. Maiden over for Cummins.

Short-pitched delivery, trying to attack the bodyline but this is angled a bit more down leg. Mulder ducks under it as well.

PITCH REPORT, DAY 5 - Mark Nicholas and Khaya Zondo are pitchside. They say that it's still a good pitch, and it has gotten flat. There is some grass in the middle, and the ball grips and turns in that area. As a bowler, you need to target the stumps to make it difficult for the batters. Overall, it is going to be a tough day for the batters.

In conversation with Mitchell Starc - Mark Howard is having a chat with Mitchell Starc near the deck. Starc starts by talking about Matt Renshaw and mentions that he's been fantastic and he's been having a great week. Starc goes on to mention that there aren't heaps of demons in the wicket, but there is enough to exploit, and he was happy that they managed to get a full day's play in on Day 4. Starc further mentions that there were clouds post-Tea for a couple of days, but the people working on the computers informed them that on Day 4 there wasn't much chance of bad light, and that influenced the timing of the declaration. Starc ends by having a look at the deck and says that there are enough footmarks for the likes of Nathan Lyon and Matt Renshaw to take advantage of.

Stage set for a grand finale - Can the Australian bowling attack wrap up the tail before tea, or will South Africa mount a heroic rear-guard fight to save the match? We shall find out soon.

Australia hunt for relentless consistency - Australia batted with superb intent to set this game up, but their bowling attack must remain patient today. Instead of searching for magical balls or leaking easy boundaries with over-attacking lines, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood need to test the batters on tight lines and let the deteriorating day five pitch do the work.

Proteas need pure defensive grit - For South Africa, the lesson from yesterday evening is crystal clear. Their top order cannot afford loose strokes outside off stump like the ones that cost Bedingham and Stubbs late in the day. Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder must show extreme discipline, leave the ball smartly, and focus entirely on batting out time rather than chasing the distant target.

A long final day or a quick one? Right then, Day 5 has been forced in this game, mostly because of late interruptions on the first 3 days. For the first time, on Day 4, we didn't lose any overs to the weather or bad light, and that has helped get this game moving along at a brisk pace. With 319 runs to get and 6 wickets remaining, one would favour the bowling side and if we do get an interruption-free Day 5, then Australia are very likely to take the lead in this series. Everything hinges on one stand - For South Africa, the pairing of Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder will be key, and both of them have the capability to hurt the opposition. Markram showed his mettle against the Aussies in the 2025 WTC Final, but he'll have to go above and beyond this time around to save the match for his team. Overall, South Africa weren't at their best with the ball, and there were too many loose deliveries. With the bat, it has been a similar story to the first innings as well. Most of the top order has fumbled, and David Bedingham has gotten out after doing all the grunt work, in the 40s, just like the first innings. The likes of Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs flopped again, making it really tough now for their side to get something out of the contest.

Bowlers follow up Renshaw's good work - After starting Day 4 at 33/0, Australia went on to score 314/6, mustering up 281 quick runs with a session and some extra time remaining. The star yet again was Matt Renshaw, as he followed up his 190 in the first innings with an 82. There were runs throughout the Aussie lineup barring Travis Head, and a late surge from Pat Cummins and Beau Webster allowed the visitors to declare at the right moment. With 3 hours of play remaining in the Day, the Aussies came out firing with the ball and picked up an early wicket. There was a lull for a while, but once they got rid of David Bedingham, they managed to string a couple of more wickets together. Renshaw even got rid of Temba Bavuma as Josh Hazlewood picked up a couple of wickets.

3.31 pm GMT - STUMPS, DAY 4 -  With just one more day left in this Test match, Australia have put themselves in a fabulous position to go on and win the game. Day 4 has been very productive for them, and all the pressure now resides with the hosts, who need 319 more runs with just 6 wickets in hand.

Safely negotiated by Mulder. And that will be Stumps on Day 4! A touch short and turning into the batter from outside off. Wiaan Mulder goes deep inside the crease and blocks it watchfully. South Africa are 102/4, needing 319 runs to win.

Australia have managed to break the budding stand between Bedingham and Markram with the former missing out to convert yet another start. Markram, though, has parked himself well onto the crease and is looking really organised out there with Bavuma getting his eye in. There is still an hour of play left, and if these two can bat through to stumps, it will do wonders for the confidence in that South African dressing room. Australia, on the other hand, will look to get a wicket or two to further tighten the grip on the contest. OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! The change in length has taken Ryan Rickelton completely by surprise, and South Africa lose and early wicket. Josh Hazlewood has probed the line outside the off stump so far, but he now bowls a sharp bumper over middle and leg and extracts plenty of steep bounce. Rickelton sets up to pull but ends up going at it half-heartedly, ending up getting a feather of an edge behind. Alex Carey leaps up to take the catch and South Africa now need 414 more runs to win with 9 wickets in hand.

Good keeping by Alex Carey. Mitchell Starc bends his back a bit more and bowls this one at over 147 clicks, trying to angle it into the batter. However, he ends up spraying it a mile down leg and Carey has to put in a big dive to his left to save any extra runs.

There's that swing. Very full and just outside off, and this one curves away before landing on the popping crease. Rickelton jams it out to cover and pinches a quick single.

'The Hoff' starts with a maiden. Good-length delivery, around the top of off. Rickelton stays inside his crease as he blocks it down to backward point.

Simon Katich on air confirms that Steve Smith is off the field. Michael Neser is in as his substitute. What we still don't know is whether Neser is a concussion replacement or an ordinary substitute.

Nice and full, in the channel again and this one just threatens to shape back in. Rickelton stays watchful and lets it go. Good probing lines from Hazlewood so far.

Oh, the change of angle nearly does the trick for Starc. Bowled from around the wicket, darting the ball in from wide outside off, and getting it to straighten off the deck. Markarm is squared up and the ball zips past the outside edge.

FOUR! That's an eye-catching stroke by Aiden Markram. Starc goes too full as he searches for some swing and ends up serving a wide half-volley at 144.1 kph. Markram nails the punchy cover drive and the ball races to the fence in a flash.

Starc looks for the inswinger but the starting line ia  bit too straight and this is sprayed down the leg side.

Starc pulls the length back, angling it across the off stump. Markram shoulders arms at it. Not much swing on offer to begin with.

South Africa's chase is up and running right away. A full ball around off, getting it to swing away. Ryan Rickelton leans into the drive and times it well, and it is equally well stopped by Pat Cummins at cover. The batters do scamper through for the single, though.

FOUR! A bit streaky again, and Pat Cummins says that his side have enough on the board as he brings out the declaration. Flatter delivery, pushed through outside off. Webster brings out the reverse sweep, edging it fine and down to deep third for a boundary. Australia declare at 314/6.

Cummins gets away with a complete miscue now. Flighted up on a length, turning into the batter. Cummins is early in his swing, getting a top edge that lands around the square leg region, and Cummins gets a single.

SIX! Wow, Pat Cummins is on fire out there. Harmer lobs the ball up at the stumps, keeping the length a tad short but Cummins manages to get a hold of the slog sweep and clobbers it over deep mid-wicket for a third six in the last four balls.

Harmer flattens it up and bowls it very full and outside off. Cummins tries to drag it across the line but loses his shape and is lucky to not be stumped here.

SIX! Another one! Did Tristan Stubbs parry it over the ropes? Looks like it. Darted in a bit at the stumps, Cummins hangs back and shuffles to the off side, swinging it down to deep square leg, where Stubbs makes a mess of it and spills it over the ropes. It will go down as a dropped chance and perhaps one that should have been taken.

SIX! Australia's lead moves to 403. A bit too full and around off, Pat Cummins leans back and across, thwacking it away flat and overdeep mid-wicket for a six.

DROPPED! A very tough chance, and David Bedingham had it in his grasp for a moment as well, but fails to cling on. Darted in at the stumps, Pat Cummins brings out a reverse sweep, forcing it high over short third. Bedingham runs back over his shoulders and lunges ahead, going at it with both hands, but the ball pops out. Two taken.

Drifted onto the pads, Webster tucks it neatly to the right of short fine leg and picks up a single.

Flighted up at just 81.8 kph and wide outside off. Webster clips it back to the bowler.

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Maharaj pulls off a stunning catch and ends a fluent knock from Renshaw. Full and tossed up on off stump, 80.1 kph, and Renshaw goes for the drive down the ground but can’t keep it down. He chips it flat and to the right of the bowler. Maharaj dives low in his follow-through and gets both hands to it, but the ball pops out as his elbows hit the turf. It threatens to drop on the ground, but he juggles a bit again in the second attempt. Did that carry? Maharaj, lying on the floor, thinks so, and he is claiming it the catch. The TV umpire is called in. The side-on replay shows that the ball actually brushed his hair and landed right on the fingers of his left hand and got stuck in his grasp. Quite an extraordinary wicket and Renshaw is applauded off as he walks back to the dressing room. Australia are 270/6, leading by 376 runs.

Fair catch? Keshav Maharaj is claiming that he has held on to this return catch. It did wobble a few times, actually, and the umpires have gone upstairs. It seems very close, but the last angle from the off side shows that the final bounce, which seemed to be bouncing off the turf, is actually off Maharaj's finger and it will be OUT.

SIX! Clears the fence! Showing some hurry now. Too full on middle, Matt Renshaw clears the front leg away and looks to swing it down the ground, but his bat twists at the point of contact, but still, he manages to power it over the leaping Tristan Stubbs at long on for a six.

Drinks Break! Australia continue to firm their grip on this Test, with Renshaw scoring another polished fifty and receiving decent support from the other end. But the question is, how many more runs will make Australia feel comfortable and confident to bowl the Proteas out? A lead of 326 is already massive, and with the pitch showing signs of wear, the chase won't be easy for the hosts. One assumes the declaration will come before Tea, but let's not get into predictions. Marco Jansen to continue after the break.

Oh, that is a late call from Webster to deny the single, but a correct one. Length again, in the channel and Renshaw taps it to the left of backward point. The batters set off for the single before Renshaw is sent back and scampers back home.

Good-length delivery on off, Jansen hits the deck rather than just kiss it. Renshaw defends it just to the on side.

Harmer slows this one up, floating it in and around off and getting some grip off the deck. Renshaw is a bit squared up but manages to edge it down with soft hands towards gully.

Renshaw overturns an LBW decision. This is floated up and drifted into the pads. Renshaw looks to reverse sweep but has to drag a very full ball and misses, getting hit on the back leg. There is a loud appeal, and it's been given. Matt Renshaw instantly reviews it, though. If Renshaw hasn't hit it, then it's adjacent to the stumps. However, initial replays suggest that there is some glove involved and UltraEdge confirms the same. The third umpire asks the on-field umpire to reverse his call to Not Out.

We haven't seen Jansen get back into the attack yet. How long before Bavuma turns back to him? For now, Simon Harmer continues.

Another pacey over by Nortje, and it ends up being a maiden. Back of a length, slanted back in from around off. Webster stays back and compact, just dabbing it down to the right of the short leg region.

Fuller now and around off stump, Webster defends it on the front foot.

Hard length over middle, a bit of steep bounce on offer as well. Webster rocks back to pull but miscues it badly.

Ooh, that's cannoned into the left bicep. A heavy bumper from Nortje, at a fiery 147.1 kph and right at the batter. Webster leans to the off side but is unable to duck completely under it and takes a body blow. Webster does shrug it off quickly, though.

FOUR! Matt Renshaw has swept really well so far, and he brings up his FIFTY to follow up a ton in the first innings. Lobbed up full and around off, Renshaw brings out the reverse sweep and hits it down into the surface and wide of the slip fielder. The ball rolls down to deep third for a boundary. Australia now lead by 321 runs.

Edged, but it doesn't carry! Hard length in the channel, at a brisk pace again and seaming away. Beau Webster is caught on the crease and jabs at it with hard hands, edging it down in front of Aiden Markram at second slip. Shaun Pollock on air had mentioned earlier that the slip fielders need to be a bit more close in at this ground.

A rib-tickler at 145.4 kph now, Renshaw hops inside the line and tucks it down to fine leg for a single.

Nortje bashes a shorter length, at 144.4 kph and slanting it across theleft-hander. Matt Renshaw rises back with the bounce and looks to cut but cops it back onto the deck.

On a good length, pitching it on middle and leg. Renashw moves inside the line and flicks it to short mid-wicket.

Flatter one attacking the stumps, it comes in and stays low. Webster presses back to keep it out.

OUT! DRAGGED ON! Nortje lets out a huge roar as he breaks a budding partnership. It's his second wicket of the innings, and he has been South Africa's most effective bowler so far. He bowls it fuller in length, outside the off stump. It skids through the surface as Carey goes for the cover drive, but the ball takes the inside edge and crashes into the stumps behind. Carey throws his head back in disappointment and trudges off. Australia are 205/5, leading by 311 runs.

FOUR! Finds the gap expertly and that brings the 200 up for Australia! On a good length outside off, Alex Carey rocks back and punches it through the gap between mid off and cover. Mulder gives chase and attempts to pull the ball back before the ropes, but lands awkwardly on his right shoulder as it trickles into the fence. He collides with the advertising boards behind the boundary and is left in visible pain, clutching his bowling shoulder and requiring medical attention.

Fuller in length, on off, Carey flicks it against the spin towards deep mid-wicket for a single.

On the off stump, full in length, Renshaw lunges forward and eases it to cover-point for a quick single.

Beauty! Simon lands it full and gets the ball to jump and spin away from off, Matt Renshaw is forced to play with the angle, looking to defend, but the ball zips past his outside edge.

On a length, around off, Renshaw hangs deep inside the crease and taps it into covers for a single. With that, Australia lead by 300 runs! The Kangaroos are hopping away without any trouble and hold a strong grip in this Test now.

Invites the batter for a drive by bowling it full and outside off, but Renshaw decides to leave as the ball spins away.

Short and on the leg stump, Alex sits underneath it.

Beaten! Hits the length hard and generates extra bounce, outside off, Carey weighs on the back foot to play the square cut but the ball bounces over his angled bat.

Anrich Nortje seems to be facing an issue with his right toe. The physio comes out and Nortje gets some tape wrapped on it before starting his new over.
