Into the final session we go - South Africa have had their claws into this contest, but Boland has dug in admirably at one end with robust defensive skills. There are as many as 44 overs left in the match, though fading light may intervene before then. If Australia can dig in for another hour and a half, they might just escape with a draw. South Africa, meanwhile, need four more wickets to level the series and send it to a decider in Cape Town. Proteas keep making inroads - Travis Head was the thorn South Africa could not shake off. After surviving a few nervy moments, he converted his start into a gritty century, anchoring Australia's innings and finding a willing ally in Scott Boland at the other end. Just when Australia seemed to be rebuilding, Wiaan Mulder found a way through. Head's dismissal opened the floodgates, and Steve Smith followed soon after. These two quick gut-punches left the tourists reeling from 209 for 4 to 225 for 6.

The pair did well to see off the new ball, with Head looking increasingly assured at the crease. However, Labuschagne fell in the 30s to an avoidable shot, and South Africa seized on that opening, with Harmer making the most of whatever assistance the surface offered.

Australia left reeling - Earlier in the day, Australia were skittled out for just 99 in their first innings, handing the Proteas a massive 326-run lead. Steve Smith brought up 11,000 Test runs, but that was about the only real highlight for the tourists in an otherwise disappointing innings. Marco Jansen led the charge with a five-wicket haul, while Anrich Nortje's groin issue left South Africa without one of their frontline pacers. That left Temba Bavuma with a decision to make, with the option of batting for a little while to give his bowlers a breather before putting Australia back in.

A fight for survival - Australia's poor shot selection and lack of patience proved costly in the first innings. They will need to show greater application this time around to protect their series lead. South Africa, meanwhile, could face a challenge of their own, with Anrich Nortje ruled out for the rest of the Test due to a groin issue. That leaves more work for the remaining pacers, including Kagiso Rabada, who is still working his way back from injury. Play is expected to resume at 1.15 pm GMT, so don't go anywhere!

Jansen runs through Australia - Coming into the second session, the big question was whether Steve Smith could rally the lower order, stave off South Africa's charge and help Australia avoid the follow-on. He brought up 11,000 Test runs during his stay at the crease, but was in visible discomfort with a sore neck, and the wickets tumbling around him only added to the pressure. Australia eventually folded meekly, with Marco Jansen completing a five-wicket haul to cap off a fine all-round effort after his valuable contribution with the bat. Nic Maddinson, who bagged a duck in the first innings, fell cheaply again, but Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne have shown some fight in the second dig.

12.57 pm GMT - TEA, DAY 4 - South Africa walk off happy with their work in the session, though it could have been even better had Marco Jansen held on to that catch offered by Travis Head. Australia have their backs against the wall, but after Nic Maddinson fell early, Head and Marnus Labuschagne did well to settle things down and offer some resistance.

Flatter and shorter, on off. Labuschagne uses the depth of the crease to nudge it on the bounce to short leg. That will be Tea on Day 4.

Drags the length back, on off. Head punches it to deep cover for a single. The 50 is up for Australia.

FOUR! Gets it away. Harmer drifts onto the pads, a bit full. Head gets down on one knee and plays the sweep aerially behind square leg for a boundary.

Had to hurry! Rabada hits the deck hard, on middle. Labuschagne drops it with soft hands to the left of mid-wicket and scampers through for a quick single. Marques Ackerman gets to the ball and releseas an underarm throw at the bowling end but does not hit. Labuschagne was in anyway with the dive.

With about 20 minutes left for the Tea break, Kagiso Rabada returns to the attack.

Head goes back in the crease and flicks it away behind square leg for a couple.

That is punched off the back foot, but not in the gap at cover.

DROPPED, FOUR! A rare blemish from Marco Jansen, who has been brilliant with both bat and ball in this Test. Angled in before straightening off the deck, on a back of a length, outside off. Head follows the ball with his hands. The outside edge flies quickly to Jansen at gully and it comes to him at shoulder height. Marco is rushed and he cannot get both hands together quickly. The ball clips the fingertips of his left hand and goes behind towards the fence.

Missed out. Short and wide on off. Head flashes but the ball goes over the blade.

FOUR! Put away with ease. Overcorrection by Mulder, dragged down and enough width for Labuschagne to work with. He stays beside the line and punches it through point for four more.

Ryan Rickelton comes up to the stumps.

FOUR! Lovely wristwork. A bit too full by Mulder, on middle. Labuschagne has a slight shuffle across the stumps. He stays balanced and rolls his wrists to flick it past the diving mid-wicket fielder. Australia trail by 306 runs.

Fuller in length, on the off stump. Labuschagne leans across to block it out. Gets it off the inner half to mid-wicket.

Around off, on a back of a length, Head punches it to deep cover for a single.

Marnus Labuschagne is still having trouble with his right eye and is now getting some eye drops to help ease the irritation.

Full and wide on off. Labuschagne is late on the drive and ends up chopping it down off the bottom half of the bat down the strip.

Marnus Labuschagne pulls away, seemingly bothered by something in his right eye. He takes a moment to sort it out and is ready to go again.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Kagiso Rabada answers right back. Nic Maddinson falls to Rabada for the second time in the game. KG drags the length back and brings the line closer to the off stump, bowled at 143 kph. Maddinson could have left the ball on length, but he has a feel for the delivery. The ball leaves him with the angle to take the outside edge, and Ryan Rickelton completes the catch at waist height. Australia are 8/1, trailing by 318 runs.

FOUR! Nicely played. Going away, slightly fuller. Nic gets on top of the bounce and thumps it on the up through covers for his 2nd boundary.

OUT! CASTLED! Mulder gets the big fish. End of a painful stay at the crease for Steve Smith, who has battled both the South African attack and discomfort in his neck. His resistance finally comes to an end. Hits the good length, on off and middle. Smith stays on the back foot to deal with it but the ball lands and cuts back in towards the right-hander. Smith is late on the ball and does not account for the seam movement. Gets beaten on the inside edge and the ball goes on to crash into the stumps. Australia lose their last recognised batter, needing 130 more runs to avoid the follow-on.

Smith cops a blow! As if the sore neck wasn't causing him enough trouble already. Jagging back in sharply with a bit of extra bounce. Smith hangs back to defend but is beaten on the inside edge and and wears it on the box.

FOUR BYES! That has beaten everyone! Nipping back in off the deck, on a good length, at bail-trimming height around the off stump. Smith shoulders arms. Ryan Rickelton is standing up to the stumps and is undone by the seam movement. The ball clips his fingertips and goes into the fence.

Steve Smith takes a couple of painkillers to ease his sore neck, which has been bothering him throughout the session.

11,000 Test runs for Steve Smith! Another monumental milestone for the Australian stalwart. He joins Allan Border and Ricky Ponting as just the third Aussie to enter this elite club and the fastest of the three to get there in terms of matches (126). But there is barely a fuss from Smith. He puts his head down and gets straight back to work. On a hard length, on off. Smith hops and dabs it in front of square on the off side for a single.

The outside edge flies quickly to second slip, where Aiden Markram takes a reverse-cup catch at shoulder height to his left. This is Jansen's 5th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, and his first against Australia, according to the on-air commentators.
