Commentary

Right then, Group B is heating up and with England now out of the race for the semifinals, we have a three-way race between Afghanistan, Australia and South Africa for the top two spots. Next up, it is another game in Group A as hosts Pakistan take on Bangladesh in Rawalpindi in what will be a match for pride with the loser finishing without a single win. That game will be played on Thursday, 27 February and will begin at 9 am GMT. However, as usual, you can tune in to our build-up about an hour in advance. Cheers!

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the skipper of Afghanistan, says that he is pretty happy with the team’s effort and the entire nation back home will be happy for this win as an underdog has rewritten history again. Adds that it was a wholesome experience beating England in the World Cup 2023 and they are improving day-by-day which is showing in their performances over the years in the big ICC events. States that today’s was a tense game but they controlled the end moments well and absorbed the pressure pretty well to get over the line. Mentions that Ibrahim Zadran is really a talented player as there was too much pressure when they were three down in the first inning but the partnership between him and Zadran set up the game for themselves. He rates the knock of Ibrahim as one of the best he has ever seen and Azmatullah Omarzai also played really well in the end with good intent, in the bowling, he was just exceptional, picking up a five-wicket haul. Emphasizes that the beauty of their group is that they have a few youngsters and experienced guys too so it is a good mix of both and everyone knows the roles so they keep performing well and he is pretty happy with that. Talks about the game against Australia and says, this win will give them a lot of confidence and they are looking forward to that challenge.

Jos Buttler, the captain of England says that it is really disappointing to be out of the tournament and reckons that they had their chances in the game but are gutted. Adds that Joe Root batted wonderfully and needed one of the top 6 batters to stay with him. Feels that Jamie Overton added a good stand with him as well before eventually it got away from them. Mentions that things got away in the final 10 overs off the first innings and admits that Ibrahim played really well. On the injury to Mark Wood, Buttler credits the fast bowler for returning on the field after hurting his knees and informs that he will be further assessed later on. Reminds that Liam Livingstone also went off the field at one point and even he came back on and they have to use their resources to break the stand in the death overs. On Root, he says that his ODI record is outstanding and he showed great character and if one of the batters had stayed with him, things could have been different. Ends by talking about his own form and reckons that he isn't far away from his best but is disappointed to not deliver.

Ibrahim Zadran is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his match-winning daddy hundred. Says that he was expecting the catch and is happy to grab the match-winning catch. Adds that he batted for 50 overs but he wanted to go on the ground and contribute to the team with his fielding and he is happy that he did that. Mentions that this hundred means a lot to him and he talks about the hard work he has put in the practice sessions that has paid off. States that he trusted himself and he wanted to bat as long as he could. Further adds that they did play here last time in the Asia Cup so he knew the conditions and he had an idea as he just wanted to play proper cricketing shots. Tells that when you win any game, it automatically gives you a lot of energy and excitement and a different kind of confidence. Says that in the end, the team wins which plays better cricket and today, they did that and the credit goes to the the group. Talks about the preparation against Australia and he says that they will try not to make many mistakes there and bring their A game.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Hashmatullah Shahidi had no hesitation in batting first even though in the last game at this venue we saw a lot of dew during the chase and wanted to just stick to the team's strengths. However, his decision seemed to backfire a bit and Afghanistan lost 3 wickets for 30-odd runs inside the first 10 overs. Jofra Archer was the one who ripped through the top order but Ibrahim Zadran held up one end nicely and then started to tick along nicely. He added meaningful stands with the skipper and then with Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi, eventually going on to score a mammoth 177 runs as Afghanistan breached 320 runs.

England will be absolutely gutted right now and their ODI form continues to be on the downside rather than getting up. Since that 2023 ODI World Cup, England simply haven't been able to play as a cohesive unit in big games and yet again, it was a patchy performance. Ben Duckett got off to a good start but they lost a couple of early wickets and then Joe Root showed them how to work their way through the middle overs but the likes of Duckett and then Jos Buttler couldn't kick on after getting a fine start. Root went on to notch up a fine ton but was struggling for fitness and eventually perished at the death, at a crucial juncture and they just left too much to do for their bowlers down the order.

For so long, Afghanistan have been dubbed as the upcoming team, as the giant killers when they win a game against the big boys but now, they are inching closer and closer towards becoming one of the top white-ball sides in the world, especially in sub-continental conditions. After having got to well over 300 runs, Afghanistan were always in the game and they got off to a good start as well, picking up an early wicket. The game ebbed and flowed but the spinners bowled 18 overs on the trot from overs 17-34 and kept things in check. However, it was Azmatullah Omarzai who was the real difference maker as he picked up the crucial wicket of Jos Buttler and then that of Joe Root at the death before cleaning things up and ending with a sensational five-wicket haul.

AFGHANISTAN KEEP REWRITING HISTORY! The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore has produced yet another classic and look who's involved in a close finish again? Yes, it is England and yet again, they have been undone at the death and are knocked out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Afghanistan though will have their eyes on creating more history as they have a one-game shootout against Australia, yes the same side they lost so heartbreakingly against in that 2023 ODI World Cup and boy, that should be some game. Spare a thought for Joe Root though, finding an ODI ton after almost 6 years and giving it his all, but it just wasn't enough. Some really sad faces in the English camp.

49.5W

OUT! CAUGHT! AFGHANISTAN HAVE DONE IT! AND ENGLAND ARE KNOCKED OUT OF THE CHAMPIONS TROPHY 2025! Azmatullah Omarzai is the superstar as he picks up a five-wicket haul in their must-win match. He bowls this slightly fuller, around off, Adil Rashid has to swing at it and he does so but mistimes it and gets it through the outer half of the bat. The ball goes high in the air towards long off where Ibrahim Zadran backtracks a bit and takes it with his outstretched hands to his right. AFGHANISTAN WIN BY 8 RUNS.

49.41

Goes fuller, around off, Wood drills it out to long off but just for a single only. They need now 9 runs off the last 2 balls. Will have to hit boundaries now.

49.31

Hard length, around off, Adil Rashid moves across a bit and looks to pull it but gets a top edge that flies towards long off but just falls ahead of the incoming fielder and the batters take a single.

49.21

On a good length, and outside off, Wood swings at it and slaps it hard but straight to deep cover for a single. He has done his job. England need 11 now off the last four balls.

49.11

Back of a length, around off, with pace off, Adil Rashid makes room and thumps it to long off and wants to have second but the fielder is quick to throw the ball at the non-striker's end and the batters have to restrict for just a single.

13 needed off the final over. Azmatullah Omarzai to bowl it and he's been brilliant all evening and a wicket here will finish things off in style but one big hit and England will be back in it. It seems like the umpires are calling Fazalhaq Farooqi back onto the field as he went off after the last over and probably the right call, if you're fit enough to bowl then you're fit enough to field.

Hard length, around off, Wood taps it towards backward point and wants to have a quick single but is sent back by Adil Rashid as he wants the strike for the next over. Now, the equation has gone to 13 off the last 6 for England.

Mark Wood is the last man in for England.

48.5W

OUT! CAUGHT! ENGLAND ARE NINE DOWN! AFGHANISTAN NEED JUST ONE NOW! Fazalhaq Farooqi is bowling cleverly here as he takes the pace off, rolls his fingers and serves it on a good length just outside off, Jofra Archer mistimes his shot as he looks to slog it down the ground. The ball catches the upper part of the bat and goes in the air towards long on where the much experienced Mohammad Nabi takes it with both hands at his chest height yet again. England are 313/9. They need 13 off the last seven balls.

48.41

Back of a length, around off, Adil Rashid opens the face of the bat and guides it to short third man for a quick single. The fielder makes a throw at the batter's end but misses.

48.31

A low full toss, in trying to attempt a yorker, just outside off, Jofra Archer extends his arms and drills it to sweeper cover for a single. Good bowling from Fazalhaq Farooqi under pressure as he has given just two runs of the first three balls.

48.21

Slower again, but fuller and well outside off, Adil Rashid goes low and looks to loft it inside out over cover but gets it through the inner half of the bat to long off for a single.

48.10

Slower length ball, from around the wicket, on off, Adil Rashid gets squared up and drops it down back to the bowler.

Back of a length, with pace off, around off, Adil Rashid taps it wide of cover and runs it for a quick single. They need 16 off the last two overs.

Adil Rashid walks out to bat now.

47.5W

OUT! CAUGHT! AZMATULLAH OMARZAI IS TURNING THIS GAME ON ITS HEAD! He picks up his fourth wicket of the evening as he bowls a slower ball again, a bit fuller, around off, Jamie Overton clears out his front leg and looks to thump it down the ground. He gets deceived by the lack of pace and mistimes this towards long on where Mohammad Nabi makes no mistakes as he pouches it with both hands at his chest height. England are 309/8 and they need 17 off the last 13 balls.

47.41

Slightly fuller, around middle, Archer knocks it down to long on for a single. Quite a sensible batting from both batters here.

47.31

Back of a length, around off, Overton turns it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

47.24

FOUR! BOUNDARY UNDER PRESSURE! Back of a length, touch outside off, with pace off again, Jamie Overton gets inside of the line of the ball and pulls it along the ground to deep mid-wicket for a boundary. Ibrahim Zadran overruns it and again a sloppy effort in the field from Afghanistan.

47.11

DROPPED! Slightly fuller, slower as well, outside off, Jofra Archer plants his front leg ahead and looks to slog it over cover. He mistimes it high in the air as Rashid Khan runs back a long way to his left from mid off and extends his arms to catch it but the ball bursts out through his hands. Meanwhile, they run for a single.

47.11wd

WIDE! Bangs in short of a length, above the head, Jofra Archer ducks under it. Called a wide.

Commentary

We are back for the all-important run chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of Afghanistan. Ben Duckett does come out to open the innings for England alongside Phil Salt. Fazalhaq Farooqi will get proceedings underway with the ball, A slip in place, let's go...

... The Run Chase ...

Right then, Afghanistan boasts a potent bowling attack, and with ICC Champions Trophy 2025 survival hanging in the balance, the pressure is mounting. England will need to dig deep and produce a remarkable batting performance to overcome this significant hurdle but the pitch is pristine for batting as well. The stage is set for a thrilling contest! Join us in a bit for the run chase.

The man of the moment, Ibrahim Zadran is up for a quick chat. He says that it is a bit easy to make a comeback in international cricket with 50-overs cricket as you get enough time to settle in. Adds that the expectations were high for him as he hasn’t played this format for the past year and he is happy that he has played that kinda inning. Mentions that he tries to put himself under pressure to play a good knock and he has enjoyed it. He says that he was trying to correct his basics when he was resting as he just wanted to keep everything simple and not overdo anything. He thinks that the discipline is very important. Talks about his coach Jonathan Trot as he shares his experience with the rest of the team as he has played a lot of cricket in Afghanistan. Concludes it by saying, during the net sessions, he has talked to him on several occasions and Trot has said to him to play a long inning and he is happy that he did that exactly.

England on the other hand started strongly as Jofra Archer wreaked havoc in the first 10 overs but they lost their way in the last 25 overs, allowing Afghanistan to post a formidable total. The injury to Mark Wood forced skipper Jos Buttler to rely on part-time bowlers, which ultimately benefited the Afghan batters. Jofra Archer had a promising start, claiming three wickets, but his later overs were expensive, undoing some of the early good work. To make matters worse, England also have a couple of more injury concerns with Ben Duckett going off the field early on and then towards the end, Liam Livingstone also had an issue with his right knee, which will only add to their challenges in the run chase.

Afghanistan's innings didn't get off to the best start, losing three early wickets, including Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sediqullah Atal, and Rahmat Shah. However, Ibrahim Zadran and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi steadied the ship with a solid 103-run partnership for the fourth wicket. This laid the perfect foundation for the rest of the batsmen to come in and play aggressively. Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi took full advantage of the platform set, coming in and playing some explosive cricket, finding the fence regularly. Meanwhile, Ibrahim Zadran continued to anchor the innings, scoring boundaries and keeping the scoreboard ticking. In the end, Ibrahim top-scored with a magnificent century, while Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai chipped in with valuable contributions in the 40s. Mohammad Nabi provided the finishing touches to help Afghanistan post a challenging total on the board.

We've reached the midway break in this thrilling contest, and Afghanistan has managed to post an impressive total of 325 runs on the board! The star of the show was undoubtedly Ibrahim Zadran, who played a sensational innings, scoring 177 big runs. 113 runs from the last 10 overs show how good a pitch this is to bat on as well!

Swing and a miss! A dot to end proceedings but Afghanistan have done a stellar job here. Liam Livingstone gives it a real rip and bowls it a shade fuller on middle and leg. Gulbadin Naib goes down on one knee, looking to swing it away but is beaten in the flight. Afghanistan finish with 325/7 on the board!

49.51

Flighted up around off, Rashid Khan sits down and swings across the line but gets a top edge fine of short third for a single.

Rashid Khan comes out to bat.

49.4W

OUT! CAUGHT! Gets another one does Liam Livingstone! Bowls this one short on middle and gets this one to just grip. Mohammad Nabi hangs deep in the crease and goes hard at the pull but skews it high up in the air towards long on. Joe Root settles himself under the ball and pouches it safely. End of a fine cameo by Nabi as he perishes for 40 off 24 balls.

49.31

On a dragged length and at the stumps, heaved away down to long on for just a single. Good over so far from Liam.

49.20

Tossed up, very full and on leg, Gulbadin Naib goes hard at the slog sweep but misses and gets hit on the pads.

Gulbadin Naib comes out to bat now.

49.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Had to go for it did Ibrahim Zadran but he holds out and that is the end of one of the finest ODI knocks in recent times, take a bow Zadran. Liam Livingstone bowls the leg break and tosses the ball up on the pads, Zadran sits down and sweeps it high towards deep square Jofra Archer just settles inside the ropes and takes a reverse cup catch. Zadran departs for 177 off just 146 balls and he is put his side in a commanding position.

Who will bowl the final over? It is Liam Livingstone who will bowl it. He is having a long conversation with the skipper Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid.

48.56

SIX! That has been brutally put away! Full and wide, right in the slot, Ibrahim Zadran backs away and opens up the arms before smashing it straight back down the ground for a biggie.

48.42

Full and straight, Ibrahim Zadran can't get underneath it and toe-ends it down to long on for a couple of runs more.

WIDE! Tight call! Full and wide, flirting with the tramline, Zadran leaves it alone and a wide is called.

Goes full and attacks the pads, nails it in the blockhole, Nabi can't get it away and the ball thuds his pads to roll away behind square leg. They get a leg bye.

48.22

Another overthrow! Short of a length and bowled wide of the off stump, Nabi dabs it towards cover for a single and with no one backing up, Jos Buttler throws it wide of the stumps at the bowler's end, allowing an extra run. 100 runs for this partnership also comes up with this a couple of runs.

48.11

Nails the wide yorker now, Zadran can only drive it away down to long off for a single.

Who will bowl the penultimate over of the inning? It is Jamie Overton who will bowl out here.

Oh, that's rattled Mohammad Nabi! A well-directed bumper from Archer, at around 136 clicks and angled in towards the helmet. Nabi is late on the pull and the ball goes flush onto the grill. A mandatory concussion check will now follow and the physio is out to have a look. After a couple of minutes, everything seems fine and we can continue.

47.51

Full and around off, gets the length right, Zadran hits it through extra cover for a single.

47.46

SIX! Oh, that is a sight to withhold! Another slower one, pitched up on middle, Ibrahim Zadran crouches just a bit and just hits through the line and over long on for a biggie. This is now the highest individual score of this tournament and also the highest individual ODI score by and Afghan batter.

47.31

In the air, lands safely! Back-of-the-hand slower ball, dug in well short and well outside off, Mohammad Nabi really reaches for it and cuts it over the point region for a single.

47.21

Pitched up on the pads, there to be put away but Zadran clips it uppishly and straight towards deep mid-wicket for one more.

47.11

Bowls it full and angles it in at the toes, Nabi hangs back and heaves it off the inside edge down to deep backward square leg for one. The 300 is up for Afghanistan!

OUT!

OUT!

He gets deceived by the lack of pace and mistimes this towards long on where Mohammad Nabi makes no mistakes as he pouches it with both hands at his chest height. England are 309/8 and they need 17 off the last 13 balls.

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! AFGHANISTAN'S PLAYERS ARE PUMPED UP AS JOE ROOT IS GONE! Azmatullah Omarzai breaks the partnership again as he has got the dangerous man. He changes his pace again, a bit slower and hits the deck hard, back of a length, around off. Joe Root waits for it, makes room by going to the leg side, and opens the face of the bat off late to guide it towards third man but he manages to get a thick outside edge only. The ball goes towards the keeper where Rahmanullah Gurbaz moves to his right and takes it with both hands. End of a fine knock from Root but England are now 7 down and they need 39 off the last 25 balls.

DRINKS! England have recovered well after losing two early wickets here in this long chase. The pitch does look good and this pair of Joe Root and Ben Duckett are doing pretty well here again like the first match. Their team will want from this pair to play out as much as they can so that the big hitters can come in and they can tonk the balls out of the park straight away. On the other hand, Afghanistan did well when they picked up two early wickets but since then, their bowling lacked consistency here and they are gradually losing the plot. They will need to chip in with quick wickets otherwise this game will get away from them in a quick time. An interesting passage of play is ahead of us. Rashid Khan to continue from this end.

Time for a drinks break! England is dominating Afghanistan, thanks to Jofra Archer's impressive spell, which has given them the upper hand. 11.30

Full and straight, on middle and leg, Zadran backs away and plays it back to the bowler.

Adil Rashid is now bowling, and this change might actually favor Hashmatullah Shahidi. As a left-handed batsman facing a leg-spinner, Shahidi could find it easier to navigate Rashid's spin. Plus, he seemed to be struggling against the pace bowlers, so this switch might give him a bit of a reprieve.

11.20

Nicely flighted, drifts it into the pads, slower too, Zadran leans across and blocks it off.

11.10

Rashid comes in and starts off with a full ball around off, Ibrahim Zadran gets forward and drives it to covers.

10.50

Pitched up around middle, darting it into the left-hander, Shahidi blocks it with a straight face of the bat.

WIDE! A proper bumper no but this time it is called a wide for height. Dug in quick and short over off, just over the head height and Shahidi ducks under it.

Much fuller now, on a nagging length and angled in from around off, Shahidi tentatively blocks it off.

Back of a length, around the fifth stump and at 141 clicks, Shahidi looks to get on his toes and force the cut away but miscues it badly.

Around the wicket to the left-hander, bowled on a hard length and around the top of off, Hasmat blocks it down into the off side.

OUT! CAUGHT! Afghanistan are three down inside the first Powerplay and Jofra Archer picks up his third wicket of the day! He bowls it slightly on the hard length, but down the leg side, and gets it nipped back in, Rahmat Shah just transfers his weight to the back foot and looks to pull it. He manages to get a top edge only as the ball flies to deep fine leg where Adil Rashid runs in forward and makes a slide to catch it with both hands at his knee height. Afghanistan are 37/3.

Back of a length, around off and middle, Ibrahim Zadran presses back a bit and blocks it out to mid off.

Halt! Oh, deary me! We have already seen a few issues with Mark Wood falling over while delivering the ball and he is now seen limping. The physio is out to have a look and it is that left knee that is an area of concern. Not a good sign at all for England who have already lost one frontline pacer to injury. For now, Wood is back up and trying to walk it over. Surprisingly, Wood is going to give it a go here and try and complete the over before going off for further treatment.

7.40

On a good length, into the line of the stumps, coming in with the angle, Ibrahim Zadran stays on the leg side of the ball and shows the full face of the bat to defend it to cover.

7.32

Full again, around off, Ibrahim Zadran lunges and drives it in the gap towards extra cover. Jos Buttler gives it a chase and restricts the batter to a couple of runs. It might have been three but Ibrahim slipped while turning for the third run.

OUT! LBW! Given out by Joel Wilson but Atal has sent this upstairs. On a length around middle and leg, Sediqullah Atal looks to flick this toward the leg side but gets a bit late at it. The bat too on it's way down thumps into the pads and that allows the ball to thump onto the pads first. A confident appeal from the English players and the umpire gives Atal out. After a discussion with Zadran, Atal sends this upstairs. The UltraEdge does show some murmurs but that was of the bat striking the pads and later the Ball Tracker confirms the decision of OUT with three reds.

We are underway with a single from the bat of Rahmanullah Gurbaz. On a length wide outside off, Rahmanullah Gurbaz guides this to the third man region for a single to kickstart this contest.

Done and dusted with the pre-match proceedings and we're all set to get underway! The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of England. It will be the usual pairing of Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz up top for Afghanistan. Jofra Archer has the new ball in hand and is ready to steam in. One slip in place, let's go...

We are just a few minutes away from live action but first, the officials and the mascots come out to the middle followed by the two sets of players who will line up for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of England first followed by the national anthem of Afghanistan.

English speedster, Jofra Archer is down for a chat. Jofra says that it is all about picking wickets in the Powerplay and you hope that the spinners then come in and chip in with a couple of wickets as well and by the halfway mark, you get to know what's working on the deck. Adds that pace is pace but in the last game, the balls weren't even getting above waist height.

Jos Buttler, the skipper of England, says that he feels good about bowling first as the dew came in the last game. Adds that they would have batted first as well as it looks like a really good wicket and now they have to put up a good performance today. Informs that there is only one change as Jamie Overton comes in place of injured Brydon Carse. Mentions that the seamers have good skills and the expectations are always high from them to deliver.

The skipper of Afghanistan, Hashmatullah Shahidi has won the toss and he has elected to BAT first. Hasmat says the wicket looks good and they hope the surface turns in the second innings. Reckons that they are not expecting dew because of the overcast conditions and the pitch gets slow and will support their spinners. Mentions that they had a discussion about the areas where they need to bowl in this contest. Informs they are unchanged.

England (Playing XI) - Ben Duckett, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith (WK), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (C), Liam Livingstone, Jamie Overton (In for Brydon Carse), Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

Afghanistan (Unchanged XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in favor of Afghanistan. Hashmatullah Shahidi opts to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Nasser Hussain is pitchside. Starts by saying that conditions are ideal at the moment but there is a bit of rain forecast later on. Adds that this pitch has moved a couple of pitches from the Australia-England game. Michael Atherton joins him and says that Lahore was expected to be a high-scoring venue and it has proven to be just that and this pitch is no exception. Reckons that this ground has the least amount of turn and it should stay that way.

The pitch is expected to be a batting paradise, with scores of 300+ being par. However, overcast conditions and the possibility of rain could bring seamers into play early on, making the first ten overs crucial for both teams. If rain intervenes, a shortened match could make things even more unpredictable. Don’t go anywhere as the toss and playing XI aren’t far away!

With Group B wide open, this match holds immense importance for both sides. England have a clear equation, win both remaining matches, and they reach the semi-finals, lose today, and they are out. Afghanistan face the same situation, only back-to-back wins will secure their place in the semis, while a defeat will send them packing. Given their history, Afghanistan will believe they can cause another upset, while England will be eager to prove that their 2023 loss was just a one-off.

Afghanistan, too, are coming off a tough loss to South Africa, where their batting collapsed against the Proteas’ pace attack. Rahmat Shah was the lone warrior, falling just short of a century, while the rest of the lineup struggled. Their strength lies in their world-class spin trio of Noor Ahmad, Rashid Khan, and Mohammad Nabi, but they looked out of rhythm in the last game. They will need to replicate their 2023 World Cup performance against England, where they spun a web around the English batters. The onus will also be on openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who have shown promise but need to deliver under pressure in this high-stakes encounter.

England’s tournament have started on a disappointing note, losing to Australia despite posting over 350 runs. Their bowling was below par, failing to defend a massive total, and now they face another setback with Brydon Carse ruled out due to a toe injury, with Rehan Ahmed replacing him in the squad. The English openers, especially Ben Duckett, who smashed a brilliant century, have looked solid, but the middle order has underperformed, with Harry Brook and captain Jos Buttler needing to step up in this must-win match. Bowling remains a concern, and Adil Rashid will once again be key in the middle overs to contain Afghanistan’s batters and provide crucial breakthroughs.

Hello and welcome to Match 8 of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where England take on Afghanistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This clash is a virtual knockout game, as a loss for either side would eliminate them from semi-final contention, following the washout between South Africa and Australia. These two teams have faced off in the last three ICC World Cups, with England winning in 2015 and 2019, but Afghanistan stunned them in the 2023 World Cup in India, where England's batting crumbled against Afghanistan’s spin attack. With a place in the semi-finals on the line, expect a thrilling contest between these two determined sides.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy is up and running and we have already seen some surprises in the competition and with half of the group stage fixtures still remaining, we have already got our first two semifinalists in the form of India and New Zealand from Group A. However, Group B is a different story and in Match 8 of the competition, it will be Afghanistan taking on England in a do-or-die clash at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. With both teams having lost their opening encounters, a loss here and it could be all over. Having said that, both teams might have lost their first games, but they did so in contrasting fashions and have different areas of the game to improve upon. Afghanistan were demolished by the South African bowling attack whereas, it was the batting from Australia that inflicted defeat upon England after having put on a monumental total on the board themselves. Also, when these two teams last met in an ICC ODI event, it was the ODI World Cup of 2023 in India which England would like to forget and on that occasion, it was Afghanistan that came out on top and in the recent series against India, England had their struggles against spin which will instill belief into the Afghans that they can do it again. However, England did bat pretty well in their first game with Ben Duckett scoring a blazing 165, taking his side to above the 350-run mark. Joe Root also showed why he still is England's best batter in sub-continental conditions with a fine knock of his own but the middle order couldn't quite deliver as Harry Brook continued his poor run of form. Their bowling though was a big let down and they had opportunities at different stages of the game to get on top of proceedings but failed to do so and only Adil Rashid was the one shining light. With Brydon Carse now ruled out of the tournament and Rehan Ahmed in as his replacement, we might see them play and extra spinner. Afghanistan, on the other hand, conceded too many runs in their last game and their bowling attack wasn't as lethal as expected and they certainly need someone to aid Fazalhaq Farooqi with the new ball from the other end like Naveen ul Haq used to. Also, they generally win matches when that opening pair fires and they need at least one of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran to give them that start at the top which then the middle order can build on. That spin trio of Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad and Mohammad Nabi will be crucial as usual but they need the batters to do their job as well if they are to get the win. All in all, two wounded teams who will be disappointed with their previous performances but will have a chance to usher in a new dawn and bolster their hopes of making it through the group stages. Who do you think will come out on top?
