Commentary
We are back for the chase! The players are already out in the middle, with the sun shining brightly. Abdullah Shafique and Usman Khan are the are the two openers for Pakistan. Will O'Rourke to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...
... THE RUN CHASE ...
The score is a bit overpar on a pitch which is misbehaving and has its own demons, which is helping bowlers regularly. New Zealand have quality bowlers in their ranks while Pakistan will rely heavily on their top four to do the bulk of the scoring. An interesting chase is coming up. Stay tuned.
Muhammad Abbas, the man of the moment, is up for a chat. He says that it is a special feeling and he is out of words at the moment. Adds that Chapman was incredible. Mentions that it is great to do this in front of his family and he hopes he has made them proud. Says that it is going to be a tough but Pakistan have some good batters, and they need to bowl according to the plans to defend it.
There was a period of 7-8 overs where New Zealand went boundaryless after losing three wickets early on in the game. Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman showed a lot of character by soaking in the pressure, taking their due time to settle in and slowly by slowly building a big partnership. Once the ball got old and Pakistan looked a bit tired, the duo came on the front foot to score boundaries regularly. The partnership of 199 between them was key to their big total. Daryl Mitchell showed a lot of experience in his fifty but it was Mark Chapman's wonderful century that grabbed the headlines. He came in when New Zealand were under a lot of pressure but played a gritty innings and timed really well as he eventually went onto score a big ton.
The innings was a tale of two halves - Pakistan were right on the money from the word go. They chose to bowl first and reaped rewards for their quality bowling straightaway. They had New Zealand on the back foot for a long time thanks to the bowling from Naseem Shah, Akif Javed and Mohammad Ali up front. However, things didn't pan out as planned in the second half of the innings as it went the other way. The bowling change from Mohammad Rizwan was a bit questionable as he used his prime bowlers with the new ball and in the middle phase, leaving a lot of work for someone like Salman Agha and Irfan Khan to do. That's when New Zealand cashed in heavily.
New Zealand were looking for someone to put the icing on the cake and have found a quality player in Muhammad Abbas who has played the finisher's role quite effectively to get New Zealand close to 350 which looks more than enough on this pitch.

Commentary
Right then, that it is it from this entertaining game where New Zealand take the lead in the series. They will want to seal it in the next one, while Pakistan will be hoping to level it. The 2nd ODI will be played on April 2, Wednesday, at the beautiful Seddon Park in Hamilton. It will begin at 10 pm GMT (Previous Day), but as you know, you can join us early for all the build-up to the game. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
Michael Bracewell, the victorious skipper of New Zealand says it was a great game of ODI cricket with lots of ebbs and flows, but it was great to see ODI cricket still alive. Tells that he just tried to use his resources as best as he could, he rolled the dice and got lucky, it came out well for them. Mentions Abbas played really well, and it just shows how important New Zealand's domestic circuit is going on. Reckons Mitchell and Chapman showed a lot of fight after being under pressure, they soaked in the pressure and showed the New Zealand spirit with that partnership.
Mohammad Rizwan, the captain of Pakistan says that they started well in the chase and it was good to see the positive intent. Adds that they got near the target, but the pressure got to them towards the end as they kept losing wickets at the wrong time. Mentions that they wanted to use the conditions bowling first, which they did, but they let the Kiwis off the hook and need to improve in that area to kill games off. Ends by saying that they need to do better in the middle order and the debutants are still inexperienced but they will get better.
Mark Chapman is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his incredible hundred (132 - His highest ODI score). He says the wicket was tricky, they were looking for a score lower than they got but then kicked on and got to a good total. Adds that he and Mitchell just absorbed pressure, took some risks, and trusted their gut skills. Appreciates Muhammad Abbas' knock and tells he put the icing on the cake. Reckons that the ball got old, and the conditions improved for batting. Mentions that he has a hamstring tweak, so after a couple of days' break, they will see how it is.
Presentation Time...
New Zealand's bowling effort mirrored their batting performance. They had a tough start, but Michael Bracewell and Nathan Smith provided crucial breakthroughs in quick succession. The middle overs weren’t going their way either, and the game seemed to be slipping out of their grasp until Will O'Rourke struck the big blow by dismissing Babar. Jacob Duffy then swung the momentum further with a run-out and a wicket in the same over. Nathan Smith was the star with the ball, finishing with four wickets and sealing the victory for the Kiwis.
Earlier in the game, New Zealand put up a daunting total, thanks to a sensational century from Mark Chapman, a fighting fifty from Daryl Mitchell, and a remarkable debut knock from Muhammad Abbas, who smashed the fastest half-century on ODI debut. Pakistan started well with the ball, but things unraveled in the latter half as they came under heavy fire. Their decision to go in with just five bowlers proved costly, conceding crucial runs that ultimately made the difference. Irfan Khan was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Haris Rauf and Akif Javed chipped in with two each, and Mohammad Ali and Naseem Shah claimed one apiece.
Pakistan's openers laid a strong foundation, putting up over 60 runs without losing a wicket in the first Powerplay. However, both departed in quick succession, shifting the pressure back on the team. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, the two most experienced batters, came together to steady the innings with a crucial partnership. The momentum shifted when Salman Agha stepped in with positive intent, playing his shots freely. He and Babar registered well-crafted fifties and kept up with the required rate, but the game turned when Babar fell for 78. From there, the chase unraveled, leaving Agha with too much to do and little support from the rest.
New Zealand takes a 1-0 lead with a convincing win! The scoreline might indicate a one-sided contest, but it was far from it. Pakistan fought hard and even looked on course to chase this down at one stage. However, the Kiwis staged a brilliant comeback with some outstanding bowling to clinch the victory.
OUT! TAKEN! Nathan Smith ends with a four-fer! A length ball on middle, Javed heaves, he gets more height than distance and Will O'Rourke at deep mid-wicket takes the skier comfortably. New Zealand win by 73 runs.

DRINKS! So, Pakistan have started well with the new ball. With three wickets, they are in the driving seat at the moment however, they need to regularly take wickets as New Zealand bat deep and have more core experience in the middle order. Can they dominate the middle phase? Let's find out. Daryl Mitchell joins Mark Chapman in the middle.

Talking about Pakistan, their big names return after a bit of a rest. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam are back in action but on the flip side the eyes will be on their bowling performance throughout the series as their pace-star bowler Shaheen Afridi has been excluded from the squad, leaving Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah to take the bulk of responsibility. Pakistan need to come out with a fresh approach and some energy despite all the things which are happening in the cricketing world. They’ll hope this series could be the light of their recently dark road. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.
New Zealand have named a similar squad to what we observed in the T20I series. Tom Latham is sidelined with a fractured hand and won’t be available for the series. There could be couple of new faces in Muhammad Abbas and Adithya Ashok for the Kiwis but apart from that it’s a strong experienced Kiwi team led by Michael Bracewell once again.
Hello and welcome to the first ODI between New Zealand and Pakistan. The franchise cricket have taken headlines recently in the cricketing world but we are back with some international cricket as the Kiwis hosts Pakistan for a 3-match ODI series. After a thumping win in the shortest format of the game, New Zealand will look to grow their dominance against Pakistan, after beating them in the recently concluded Tri-Series involving this too and also in the Champions Trophy. Who are you backing?
...MATCH DAY...
As the Pakistan tour of New Zealand enters its second act, cricket fans are gearing up for a 3-match ODI series that will sweep across the picturesque landscapes of the Kiwi nation. The journey begins in Napier at McLean Park, then moves to Hamilton, and finally wraps up in Mount Maunganui. After painting the T20I series with a broad brush of dominance, New Zealand is hungry to continue their winning momentum. Michael Bracewell, the captain who steered the T20I ship to a convincing 4-1 victory, will once again take the helm for the one-day matches. However, every silver lining has a cloud, and New Zealand has been dealt a couple of challenging cards. Tom Latham, a cornerstone of their batting lineup, is sidelined with a fractured hand and faces a four-week rehabilitation period. In his absence, Henry Nicholls steps up to fill the breach. Adding another twist to the tale, Will Young will miss the second and third ODIs – but for a reason that brings joy rather than sorrow. He'll be welcoming a new addition to his family, with Rhys Mariu from Canterbury getting his maiden ODI call-up as a replacement. New Zealand's batting lineup is set to be a blend of experience and emerging talent. Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell bring the weight of experience, while Mark Chapman emerges as a pivotal middle-order batter, riding high on confidence after his impressive century in the T20Is. The left-hander's recent form could be a game-changer for the Kiwis. Adding depth to the squad are new faces Nick Kelly and Muhammad Abbas, who bring all-round capabilities to the team. The bowling arsenal is where New Zealand truly shines. What's being dubbed as the next generation of New Zealand's pace attack – Will O'Rourke, Jacob Duffy, and Ben Sears – are coming off a spectacular performance in the T20Is and are expected to be the tip of the spear. Nathan Smith provides a solid fourth pace bowling option, creating a formidable bowling unit that could prove too hot to handle for the visitors. In the spin department, Michael Bracewell will lead the charge, with young Adithya Ashok adding variety to the bowling attack. For Pakistan, the series brings some familiar faces back into the mix. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan return, with Rizwan taking on a leadership role. The top order looks promising with Abdullah Shafique potentially partnering with either Babar Azam or Imam-Ul-Haq. Salman Agha is expected to play a crucial role in stabilizing the middle order. However, it's the middle order that will be truly put to the test. Salman Agha will be tasked with providing stability, while Khushdil Shah and Faheem Ashraf will need to step up and demonstrate their ability to anchor the innings and accelerate when required. This middle-order lineup is walking a tightrope, with each player carrying the weight of expectation and the need to prove their consistency. The pressure will be particularly intense given Pakistan's recent struggles throughout the tour. However, the tourists have been struggling throughout this tour and have numerous challenges to address. And one of those challenges has been the bowling unit. The bowling unit adds another layer of complexity. Once considered Pakistan's most lethal weapon, the attack has lost some of its former menace in recent years. In a bold and somewhat controversial move, stalwarts like Shaheen Afridi has been excluded from the squad, leaving Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah as the sole experienced pacers. Mohammad Wasim. emerges as the second most experienced pace option, supported by Mohammad Ali and Akif Javed. The spin department offers a glimmer of hope with Abrar Ahmed spearheading the attack, complemented by young Sufiyan Muqeem, with Agha providing additional part-time spin options. There’s no doubt that New Zealand has dominated Pakistan in this format in the recent past, with their latest triumph in the tri series in Pakistan, and also defeating them in the recently concluded Champions Trophy. This series serves a perfect opportunity for Pakistan to work on their flaws and make a strong statement this time around. Or will New Zealand further bolster their home dominance? An exciting ODI series is on the cards.
