Commentary

Right then, that is it from this rather one-sided affair. New Zealand will now look for a clean sweep, while Pakistan will play for pride. The third and final ODI will be played on 5th April, Saturday, at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. That will begin at 10 pm GMT, but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Michael Bracewell, the victorious skipper of New Zealand, says they started well with the bat but lost a few wickets, and then Mitchell Hay played an outstanding inning, which helped them get to a decent total. Tells the squad is light in experience, but they allow the players to play their natural games, and once again mentions how well the domestic circuit is going on. Reckons they have been playing really good cricket, and they don't want to sell short in the next game; they want to finish on a high. Appreciates the way Sears played, mentions he had a lot of injuries throughout his career, but today's performance will help him a lot.

Mohammad Rizwan, the captain of Pakistan, says that loss is a part of the game, and their bowlers bowled really well and used the conditions pretty well. Says that Faheem and Naseem batted well in the end, but it got too late to make it up. Tells that it was a disappointing game for them. Adds that the conditions were challenging, but as a professional player, you have to apply yourself, and they failed to do so, and he is disappointed with that. Mentions that they made the same mistakes and lost the key moments as they lost the plot in the last ten overs in the first inning when Mitchell Hay hit those boundaries. States that the New Zealand team is very good at knowing and utilizing their conditions very well.

Mitchell Hay is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his outstanding unbeaten 99. He says scoring a century didn't cross his mind at all. Tells he and Muhammad Abbas talked about taking the game deep, and Abbas helped a lot in the middle to build that vital partnership. He reckons this inning gives a lot of confidence going forward. Mentions the bowlers were awesome in this game to restrict their opponents.

Presentation Time...

Pakistan never really found their footing in this chase, struggling to cope with the extra bounce generated by the Kiwi pacers - a factor that ultimately led to their downfall. Their scorecard makes for grim reading, with eight batters failing to reach double digits, highlighting their batting woes. Several players took heavy blows to the helmet and body, and Haris Rauf was even forced to retired-hurt due to a concussion. The lone bright spot was Faheem Ashraf, who stood tall with a brilliant 73 off 80, while concussion substitute Naseem Shah also made a commendable half-century. However, chasing close to 300, Pakistan needed their senior players to step up, but once again, they fell short. A rethink is necessary as they head back to the drawing board in search of answers.

Earlier in the game, New Zealand put up a formidable total, thanks to a sensational unbeaten 99 from Mitchell Hay and a solid 41 from Muhammad Abbas. Contributions came from throughout the batting lineup, helping them get close to the 300-run mark. For Pakistan, Sufiyan Muqeem and Mohammad Wasim picked up two wickets each, while the other three bowlers chipped in with one apiece.

New Zealand’s bowlers came out firing from the very first ball, making full use of the overcast conditions and leaving Pakistan with no room to breathe in this chase. Will O'Rourke set the tone with an early breakthrough while he and Jacob Duffy bowled in tandem, with the latter striking twice, including the prized wicket of Babar Azam. The duo was simply unplayable - though they didn’t pick up more wickets, they kept things tight and unsettled the batters with some fiery short balls. Ben Sears capitalized on the pressure, striking twice in his very first over, while Nathan Smith contributed with one. Duffy added another to his tally, but it was Sears who stole the show, wrapping things up in style with a sensational maiden ODI five-wicket haul.

THE BLACKCAPS HAVE CLINCHED THE SERIES IN STYLE! A dominant display sees them secure an unassailable 2-0 lead, outclassing the Men in Green even without their standout performer from the first game. This victory highlights the incredible depth in New Zealand cricket, reaffirming their status as a powerhouse on the international stage.

Commentary

Welcome back to the chase. The players of New Zealand have come out back in the middle, led by their skipper Michael Bracewell who gave a pep talk in a huddle before they took their positions. The two openers for Pakistan are Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique. Will O'Rourke has the new ball in hand, and he will start the proceedings. Here we go...

... The Run Chase ...

With the first innings done, who will be the happier side? It is quite tough to say now, but New Zealand have got all the momentum with the Hay’s hitting in the last couple of overs. Now, all eyes are on their batters to chase it down. The pressure is on, especially after the criticism they faced back home for losing the T20I series and the first ODI, where they failed to chase a 300+ total. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s bowlers will feel confident as they have a good total on this surface, which has seam and swing movement, and if they can strike early in the Powerplay and remove a couple of key batters, they could put Pakistan under serious pressure. Which team will come out on top? Stay tuned, as the action of the second inning is about to begin!

Mitchell Hay is up for a quick chat. He says it was tough to start, but he had a plan with Abbas, the conversation was good, and they worked on the match up on how to reach a decent total. Shares that the score on the board is nice now and something for the bowlers to bowl. Reckons it was nice to get a couple of sixes out of the middle.

Pakistan’s bowlers justified their skipper’s decision to bowl first, delivering a disciplined performance till the 40 overs, though the 32 extra runs they conceded through wides could come back to haunt them. The introduction of leg-spinner Sufiyan Muqeem turned the game in Pakistan’s favor, as he struck in his very first over. Skipper Mohammad Rizwan rotated his bowlers smartly, ensuring no batter got too comfortable against a single bowler. The short three-to-four-over spells for each bowler worked for Pakistan, and every bowler chipped in with at least one wicket, highlighting an all-round team effort.

Despite wickets falling around him, Mitchell Hay stood tall, reaching a well-earned fifty. He built small but crucial partnerships with lower-order batters Nathan Smith, Ben Sears, and Jacob Duffy, ensuring New Zealand reached a competitive and defendable total. His inning was a perfect mix of patience and aggression at the end, displaying maturity under pressure. Interestingly, every Kiwi batter in the top 7 got into double digits, indicating they all got starts but failed to capitalize, except for Hay, who remained the standout performer with a brilliant 99 off just 78 balls.

Their struggles were short-lived as they lost their wickets in back-to-back overs, and suddenly, New Zealand went from a steady 100/2 to a shaky 102/4 in just a couple of deliveries. The rebuilding job then fell to Muhammad Abbas, the half-centurion from the previous match, and his captain Michael Bracewell. They managed to add 30 runs before Mohammad Wasim dismissed Bracewell, caught behind. The biggest partnership of the inning came next, with young Muhammad Abbas and Mitchell Hay putting together a vital 77-run stand. Their partnership helped the Kiwis recover and post a fighting total. However, just as they were looking to accelerate, Sufiyan Muqeem broke the stand, dismissing Abbas, who holed out to deep square leg after making 41 runs while trying to up the scoring rate.

New Zealand’s inning had ups and downs, but eventually, they ended at 292/8, thanks largely to Mitchell Hay’s crucial knock of 99 not-out. Though he missed out on a deserving hundred but this has been one of the best innings. The Kiwi openers started positively, finding the boundaries at regular intervals and putting up a solid 54-run stand in just 6.2 overs. Debutant Rhys Mariu looked promising but fell to a leading edge, cutting short his innings. Meanwhile, the other opener, Nick Kelly, played the aggressor in the partnership, stroking some classy boundaries on his way past the 30-runs mark. However, in his attempt to be greedy, he tried cutting a ball that wasn’t short enough and edged it straight to the keeper. With both openers gone, experienced batters Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell had the responsibility to stabilize the innings, but they never looked comfortable.

11.50

Hard length and outside off, going away from the batter with an angle, Faheem Ashraf leaves it alone.

DRINKS! Four balls, two wickets for Ben Sears and that too of Salman Agha and Mohammad Rizwan. New Zealand cannot do anything wrong at the moment. Their pacers cannot do anything wrong at the moment. They are utilizing the conditions perfectly. Pakistan have left with an inexperienced batting line up to come and if it continues the same way, we might have a 10-digit phone number soon on the scoreboard. Can Pakistan soak in this pressure and get back in the game? Time will tell. Faheem Ashraf joins Tayyab Tahir in the middle.

11.4W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Ben Sears picks up his second wicket on his fourth ball and Pakistan lose their skipper, and half of the side is back in the hut! Ben bowls it a bit fuller and into the line of the stumps, angling it across to the batter. Mohammad Rizwan goes on his knee and looks to slog it with a sweep shot. He manages to generate a top edge only as he gets cramped up for room. The ball skews up high in the air behind the wickets towards third man. Mitchell Hay calls it quickly and backtracks it for a while before settling under it to catch it with both hands. Pakistan are 32/5.

11.31

OUT! CAUGHT! GONE! Ben Sears picks up his maiden ODI wicket on his first ball and it is Nathan Smith who has taken the catch and has just come on the field after a break, as he went off because of an injury! Ben bowls it on a good length and around off, from over the wicket, Salman Agha charges down the track and looks to loft it inside out over cover. He slashes it hard but gets a thick outside edge, only that goes straight to deep third where Nathan Smith comes forward for a while and takes it around his shoulders. Pakistan are in serious trouble here at 31/4.

Change. First change of the innings and it's Ben Sears who will bowl now.

Bowls it full and around off, the ball lands and nips in sharply. Nicholls tries to play with a straight bat but leaves a bit of gap for the ball to ping him on the back pad. Sufiyan Muqeem bowls from around the wicket and flights a delicious full ball across the batter, outside off and turns a bit away. Daryl Mitchell comes down the track and heaves but misses, and it goes past the outside edge and to the keeper, Mohammad Rizwan, who does the rest. What was that from the umpire? First, he shook his head but quickly raised his finger the next moment. Nicholls thinks otherwise and takes it upstairs. Nothing on the UltraEdge. He survives. Short in length and angled across on the hips, Nicholls seems to miss his flick, and it brushes the thigh pads on its way to the keeper. The review saves Nicholls here.

On a nagging length and around off, angled across and takes the splice of Mitchell's blade as it rolls to third man for one.

DRINKS! A quick start despite losing two wickets from New Zealand, and they are 95/2 after the first fourteen overs. The debutant, Rhys Mariu, played a couple of good shots before pershing to a uncanny shot. He would be kicking himself for getting out in that fashion. The other opener, Nick Kelly, started on a bang as he was hitting the boundaries for fun but lost his wicket in getting too greedy. NZ have their two most experienced guy in the middle, Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell, and they will bank on them to form a good partnership here to take them past 300 on this good wicket. On the other hand, Pakistan have bowled too many wide balls, but they have been able to pick two wickets. Their bowling lacks a zip, but they will have to find some motivation to take more wickets to bounce back in this game, otherwise, it will get out of their hands in a matter of time. An interesting passage of play is ahead of us, and with that, Akif Javed will continue from this end.

We are all set to begin! The players are making their way out to the middle now. Pakistan take up their respective field positions. Rhys Mariu and Nick Kelly are the two openers for New Zealand. Faheem Ashraf has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

PITCH REPORT - Franckie Mackay is pitchside with Craig McMillan. She says that the weather is a bit cloudy and the rain can interrupt the game. Craig says that the pitch has a lot of grass, so the bowlers will be pretty happy to look at that, and they will want to use that pace and bounce. Mentions that there will be a lateral movement for sure and the early overs will be crucial for both sides whether you are batting first or bowling first. States that the wicket has been rolled pretty good, and both captains will want to bowl first as the square boundaries are short, with the straight one a bit longer.

Salman Agha from Pakistan also shares a few words. He says that they lost the key moments in the first game, which they have discussed about and will look to work on in this one. Adds that they started well with the ball and Haris Rauf was brilliant but they lost their way a bit towards the end.

The debutant for New Zealand, Rhys Mariu is up for a quick chat. He says that Sam Wells called him around this breakfast and said that he is going to play today, and he was really happy to hear that news. Adds that his family is very excited about his international debut. States that all the team members welcomed him and that they have been pretty helpful to him in understanding everything. Ends by saying that he is nervous but also excited about his first match.

Michael Bracewell, the captain of New Zealand says they have to adapt to the conditions, ride the wave and put some pressure later on. Informs Chapman misses out due to a hamstring issue. Shares New Zealand have a lot of depth and shows how well the domestic circuit has been going on. Ends by saying that Rhys Mariu makes his debut.

The skipper of Pakistan, Mohammad Rizwan, says that NZ played well in the first ODI, but they have assesed the conditions here and it looks grassy so they want to bowl first. Mentions that they want to change their strategies from the last game and want to win this. Informs that they are going with four changes.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Nick Kelly, Rhys Mariu (In place of Mark Chapman and On Debut), Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell (C), Muhammad Abbas, Mitchell Hay (WK), Nathan Smith, Jacob Duffy, Ben Sears, Will O'Rourke.

Pakistan (Playing XI) - Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq (In for Usman Khan), Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan (C/WK), Salman Agha, Tayyab Tahir, Faheem Ashraf (In for Irfan Khan), Mohammad Wasim (In for Naseem Shah), Haris Rauf, Sufiyan Muqeem (In for Mohammad Ali), Akif Javed.

TOSS - Pakistan won the toss and elected to BOWL first.

Pakistan were nearly there throughout the chase and would be disappointed to see themselves behind in the series as they had the opportunity to chase down a par score, but once Babar Azam and Salman Agha fell, there was a domino effect as Pakistan lost wickets in heaps. The good thing for Pakistan is that their big guns are back and raring to perform, but they need others to step up and make it count. Pakistan have been underperforming in recent series (Tri-nation series, ICC Champions Trophy, and recently concluded T20I series). A loss here and they’ll stretch the unwanted record more, but the way they played the first game, we feel Pakistan will be itching to get on the field and put on a match-winning performance. Can they level the series, or will the hosts get the job done today? We will find out soon. Toss and team news next.

The action moves from Napier to Hamilton as we welcome you all to the coverage of the 2nd ODI between New Zealand and Pakistan. The Kiwis lead 1-0 in the three-match series. They won by 73 runs however, the victory wasn’t served on the plate, and the hosts had to grind hard to get in front in the series. Mark Chapman shone with a wonderful century, and his partnership with Daryl Mitchell set the tone for a big score. New Zealand lost a flurry of wickets, but the debutant, Muhammad Abbas, scored his maiden fifty in a fiery fashion to take his team close to 350.

...MATCH DAY...

The ODI series between New Zealand and Pakistan rolls into Hamilton, where Seddon Park will host the second match of the three-game affair. The series opener was a gripping contest that swung back and forth, but in the end, the hosts prevailed to take a 1-0 lead. New Zealand will be eager to seal the series in Hamilton before heading to Mount Maunganui for the final ODI. Mark Chapman’s 132 powered the Kiwis to 344, setting the foundation for a commanding win as the bowlers stepped up to finish the job. Alongside Chapman, Daryl Mitchell and debutant Muhammad Abbas made valuable contributions, with Abbas enjoying a memorable international debut. However, New Zealand will be without Will Young for the remainder of the series as he awaits the birth of his child. Right-handed batter Rhys Mariu has been called up and is likely to make his debut in Hamilton. On the bowling front, Nathan Smith was the standout performer, with four wickets in a disciplined collective effort. With momentum on their side, Michael Bracewell’s men are expected to stick with a winning combination. They don’t have too many options at their disposal, but should New Zealand secure the series in Hamilton, we could see Ben Sears and Adithya Ashok get a game in the third ODI. Pakistan, on the other hand, were left to rue their decision to go in with only four proper bowling options and no specialist spinner. If they are to stay alive in the series, they must shore up their bowling attack, with Abrar Ahmed and Sufiyan Muqeem available as spin options. In the batting department, they have been dealt a blow with Usman Khan ruled out of the Hamilton fixture due to a hamstring injury, with Imam-ul-Haq likely to step in. A collective effort in both departments is imperative for Pakistan as they fight to keep the series alive. Can New Zealand wrap up the series in Hamilton, or will Pakistan bounce back to set up a decider in Mount Maunganui? We shall find out.
