Over and out from Guwahati - And... breathe. India have clinched the series 2-0 with still a game to go. Both teams will now travel to New Chandigarh for the 3rd and final ODI. India will aim for a series sweep and West Indies would be eager to dust this off and come back stronger to salvage pride. It will be played on Saturday, 3rd October, with the first ball scheduled to be bowled at 8.30 am GMT (2 pm IST). But as usual, our buildup begins in advance. So do tune in for that as well. But for now, you can feel free to switch tabs and get all the updates from the ongoing third ODI between South Africa and Australia in Potchefstroom. Cheers!

An epic in glittering gold - 812 runs scored across both innings, including four centurions and one double centurion, taking batting to a whole different galactic level. Well over a hundred boundaries were smashed along the way, with no corner of the park left untouched. We have just witnessed one of the most historic cricket matches ever played. Guwahati has never been kind to West Indies. Back in 2018, they failed to defend 322 here, blown away by a magnanimous 246-run partnership from Ro-Ko. Tonight, they were taken apart while defending 405, blown away by Gill's brilliance. So where do they go from here, and what more could they really have done? There is no simple answer, but somewhere in the middle of it all. They will need to find far greater intensity when it comes to picking up wickets and containing run flow with the ball. With the bat, though, West Indies have developed a genuinely strong crop of players stepping up alongside captain Shai Hope. Campbell and Jangoo, in particular, have done enough to cement their place in this ODI setup, and more importantly, neither is a one-dimensional player. They may have lost the series, but these positives will count for a lot as they head into the World Cup qualifiers next year.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Without a doubt, it's Shubman Gill, the Indian captain, who takes home the award for his record-breaking and historic 223* (133). Gill says that every part of his body is cramping up right now. Says that after fielding for 13 overs in the afternoon, it felt like being on the field for 20-25 overs, the way West Indies were batting. Gill says chasing 400 was never going to be easy, regardless of the pitch or conditions, and he was proud of the team's effort to stay in the contest and finish unbeaten. He explains that he broke the chase into smaller targets, aiming for 75-80 runs in the Powerplay without losing a wicket and around 200-210 by the 25-over mark. They were ahead of that target at 230-240, which he felt shifted the pressure back onto West Indies. Gill admits they did not bowl as well as they would have liked during the Powerplay, much like in the first game, allowing West Indies to bat freely. At one stage, he felt the Windies could have reached 420-430, so restricting them by 20-30 runs at the back end was a bonus. Looking ahead to the next game, Gill says India may look to give opportunities to players who have not featured yet and will assess which combination suits them best.

The captain of West Indies - On his assessment of this game, Shai Hope giggles a bit and then says there are a lot of positives to take from this game, to be very honest. He highlights the batting first, pointing out that the side has now put up competitive totals consistently. On the bowling, he acknowledges the margin for error shrinks to almost nothing against some of the greatest batters in the world, and giving them any kind of start makes life extremely difficult. Still, he is fair in giving credit where it is due, while admitting his side probably needed to be a touch tighter with the ball to give themselves a real chance after posting 400 on the board. On losing wickets in quick succession, like the previous ODI, Hope says it was not quite the same story today. He credits the side for laying down the foundation well, something they had specifically spoken about over the last couple of days, with the focus on keeping wickets in hand heading into the back end of the innings. He identifies the spinners as the main threat through the middle phase, which made building that platform all the more important. On introducing Vitel Lawes late in the innings, Hope puts it down to a bit of both. He shares that he did not want to hand the youngster the hardest overs to bowl, especially on his first tour to India. The priority, he says, was making Lawes feel as confident as possible given the occasion. He is pleased to see someone so young step up and do the job for the team, bowling really well in the process. While there is plenty still to learn, Hope is confident the youngster will only keep getting better from here.

... The post-match Presentation ...

In conversation with one of the five centurions - Rohit Sharma says that the celebration after getting to the hundred was for himself, and some things are not meant to be shared. Rohit mentions the good batting conditions allowed him and Shubman Gill to focus on building a big partnership rather than worrying about the scoreboard. He feels Gill was in complete control throughout his innings and was pleased to see him remain unbeaten at the end. Rohit shares that opening the innings after spending 50 overs in the field in hot and humid conditions was challenging, but he relied on his experience to maintain his concentration and not give his wicket away. He says they knew they needed runs from the top order and believes their 250-plus opening partnership effectively sealed the game, allowing them to finish on a high. Rohit Sharma says Ravindra Jadeja was curious about the celebration he performed after reaching his century. He told him he would explain it in the dressing room, adding that the celebration was something personal to him. He reveals that Jadeja suggested an elaborate celebration involving a slide and a jump, but after spending 50 overs in the field and then batting for around 25-30 overs, Rohit joked that he was never going to attempt it.

A batting onslaught by the Men in Maroon - On a placid surface, the Indian bowlers were taken apart by a rampant West Indies top order, with three of their top four batters raising hundreds. Campbell laid the platform, unleashing his full repertoire of shots, before Hope and Jangoo added a marathon 182-run stand for the third wicket that squeezed the life out of the Indian attack. Hope rode his luck too, surviving two drops, and made the hosts pay heavily for both. India struck late with a flurry of quick wickets, but it was nowhere near enough to stop West Indies crossing 400, their highest ever ODI total. India's attack was left short-handed as well, with Krishna and Dhir both forced off the field through injury. Jadeja, Kuldeep and Brar picked up two apiece, though the damage was already done by then, while Auqib Nabi endured a forgettable debut with the ball, going wicketless and leaking runs freely.

Plans fell flat - Shai Hope had said after the previous game that West Indies were 60 to 80 runs short of truly testing the Indian batting lineup. This time, they piled up a mammoth 405, a total that should have been mathematically impossible to overhaul, until this evening proved otherwise. For the second game running, though, they have found no answer to stemming the flow of runs, failing to pick up more than two wickets in either match. They simply caved under pressure, and no one remotely looked threatening enough to even create a half chance. Seales and the young 19-year-old Lawes did show flashes of brilliance, but the tourists failed to put together a complete bowling performance.

An Everest scaled - A 92-run powerplay in this mammoth chase set the tone early, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill taking the bowlers apart from the outset, with both Indian openers eventually converting those starts into centuries. In fairness, though, the bowling from the West Indies pacers, barring Seales, was far too leaky to hold India back. Rohit eventually fell for 101, and the likes of Kohli and Gaikwad chipped in with valuable runs of their own, Gaikwad remaining unbeaten on 31, a timely reminder to the selectors that he is there if needed. But the evening belonged to Shubman Gill in every sense. He took the responsibility upon himself and simply went hell for leather, refusing to let the bowlers settle for even an over, and turned what was already a record chase into a personal coronation.

The crowning of a Prince - If you tuned in from the very first ball today, you have just witnessed batsmanship in its purest form. Everything was on show, from raw power-hitting to textbook cricket, a full range unleashed by the batters of both sides throughout the day. But it is the Indian captain who makes the headlines, standing at the very peak of his powers as he coasts India home to a historic win. This is India's highest successful run chase in the history of ODIs. And they do it, making an absolute mockery of 406, chasing it down with 39 balls remaining. Shubman Gill stands out as the brightest star of Indian cricket's future, and his era begins right here. His appetite for runs was simply ridiculous to watch. Run after run, boundary after boundary, with every shot somehow topping the previous one. He has strolled past so many records by becoming the fastest batter to score an ODI double century.

A story for the ages - This is a chase that will be told and retold for years to come. The ones young enough to have watched it live will grow up narrating it to their own children one day, painting the picture of a night when 406 looked like nothing at all. Those who have followed this game longer, who remember an era when chasing 250 felt like a mountain, will struggle to place this innings anywhere close to the cricket they grew up on. Somewhere in between sit those who will simply call it one of the greatest chases in cricket they have ever witnessed, full stop, no comparisons needed.

Ruturaj Gaikwad hits the winning run! India rewrites the history books as this is now their highest-ever successful chase in ODI history. Roston Chase slows it up, full and on middle. Gaikwad steps across and tucks it towards short mid-wicket for a run. INDIA WIN BY 8 WICKETS AND TAKE A 2-0 LEAD IN THE SERIES.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The West Indies players are taking up their respective field positions. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are the two openers for India, and they need to give a good start to the hosts. Jayden Seales will start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

A mountain to climb - Roston Chase remained unbeaten on 29 off 25 balls, while Shamar Joseph finished 14 not out from just eight deliveries, launching a six off the very first ball he faced. At 405/7, West Indies have set India a daunting target, with the visitors needing to break their own highest successful ODI chase of 360 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013. Virat Kohli's record at this venue offers some encouragement, with the last two times he played an ODI in Guwahati bringing centuries, including his hundred in the previous game. But this is a chase he cannot be expected to pull off alone, with India needing a collective effort to create a new benchmark. Join us in a bit for the second essay.

Catching up with one of the three centurions - On being part of a record-breaking innings, Amir Jangoo calls it an amazing feeling, crediting the team's clarity in going out with a fixed plan today. He points to lessons learned from the mistakes of the first game and feels those were executed well this time around. He is quick to credit John Campbell for the amazing start and Shai Hope for carrying the innings through, keeping his own role simple, just going out and execute with the bat. On batting at number four today, Jangoo explains he learned only on the day that everyone was shuffling up a spot, which put him in at number four. He says his approach was always about reading the situation rather than a fixed position, and takes pride in preparing for different scenarios so he can execute whenever called upon. That preparation, he feels, paid off today. On his journey in international cricket so far, Jangoo puts it down to hard work, along with plenty of lessons and failures along the way. He shares that nine years of first-class cricket gave him the foundation needed before stepping into the international game. Adds that his focus now is on learning as fast as possible and enjoying this level, playing with freedom rather than fear. On facing Kuldeep Yadav, Jangoo reveals there were detailed team discussions around handling Kuldeep, given his own reputation as a strong player of spin. Adds that the team backs him to take on the spinners and dominate when the chance arrives, and today's plan was to stay positive against Kuldeep specifically. He credits the good pitch as well, saying the idea was to play as straight as possible, rotate the strike, and pick out the boundary when the opportunity presented itself.

India run out of answers - India's bowling resources were stretched, with Prasidh Krishna leaving the field after five overs and Naman Dhir able to bowl only 6.1 overs after twisting his ankle. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja both claimed two wickets and were economical as well, with Kuldeep also reaching 200 ODI wickets, but West Indies kept the runs flowing despite losing wickets regularly towards the end. Gurnoor Brar finished with 2/96, although he conceded just seven in the final over, with Auqib Nabi giving away 5 in the penultimate over as the visitors managed to limit the damage slightly.

Campbell, Hope and Jangoo lead the charge - John Campbell set the tone with a blistering 101 off just 66 balls, reaching his century from 65 deliveries. Shai Hope then followed with 104 off 90, despite being given two lives early in his innings, before Amir Jangoo took over with a superb 114 off 77. Hope and Jangoo added 182 for the third wicket, turning a strong start into a huge total and putting West Indies firmly in control.

A record-breaking effort - West Indies have produced a sensational batting display, finishing on a record 405/7 after 50 overs. They recovered brilliantly from the early loss of Kacey Carty, with three batters going on to score hundreds in the same ODI innings for the first time in their history. The hosts now face a chase that will require India to rewrite their own ODI record.

Beaten! Short and angling in from outside leg at 137.7 kph, Shamar backs away, looking to pull, but misses entirely. A fine last over from Brar, but West Indies finish on 405/7, their highest ODI total ever.

49.51

Pinpoint yorker outside the leg stump. Chase backs away and works it to cover-point for a single.

49.41

Up in the air... but safe! Brar spots Joseph moving to the leg side and cannons in a yorker on the leg stump, completely cramping the batter for room. Shamar looks to flick it to the leg side but gets a fat leading edge. The ball swirls over covers but Gill is unable to spot the ball initially and it drops in front of him. One run taken.

49.30

Play and a miss! Short of a length, on top of off, Shamar Joseph looks to carve it over backward point but misses.

49.24

FOUR! Up and over! Nicely executed by Shamar. 400 up for West Indies, for the first time in ODI history! A well-executed wide yorker from Brar, but Shamar reads it in time. He jams his bat down at the last moment and opens the face just enough to steer it over a leaping fielder at short third, with the ball sailing beyond Rohit Sharma's outstretched hands.

49.11

Spears in full and on off, Chase swings it down to long on for a single.

Gurnoor Brar will bowl the final over. Also, India have been handed a penalty for slow over rate, having to place one extra fielder inside the circle.

In the air... lands safely! Kuldeep never looked like getting into a good position to take the catch. Full on leg, and Shamar goes to hoick it across the line, but ends up slicing his shot over backward point off the leading edge. Kuldeep from short third, tracks back to take the catch, but overruns the ball, and it drops just short of him as he spins around, leaving him no chance to recover. He tumbles and bangs his head on the turf in the process, though he seems to be fine. Two runs taken.

Will the extra ball cost Auqib Nabi?

WIDE! For height. Short and over the head of the batter. Shamar swings to pull but misses to connect.

48.51

Drifts it full and down leg, on a fuller length. Roston Chase moves a bit too much across and goes for the slog sweep but misses. KL Rahul grabs it to his left. 2/75 in 10 overs for Jadeja as he ends his spell.

47.51b

Just in! Full and fired outside off at 100.5 kph. Shamar swings hard but misses completely as he loses his shape. Rahul is a bit late to react behind the stumps, and the ball deflects away to short third. The batters dash through for a bye, with Jadeja calling for the throw to come in quickly. Shamar is late off the mark but scrambles home in time regardless. And the replay confirms that Shamar is home before Jadeja whips the bails off.

47.51wd

WIDE! Spills it wide outside off, beyond the tramline. Shamar swings hard, only to miss.

47.46

SIX! Oh, hello? Extraordinary strike on the first ball. Quicker and fuller, outside off, Shamar Joseph takes it on and spanks it over the long off fence for a cracking six. This is now West Indies' highest ODI score ever.

Shamar Joseph walks out to bat next.

47.3W

OUT! CAUGHT BY ROHIT! Small pleasures for India and, more importantly, Jadeja as he gets his second wicket after a barren run in this format. Short of a length, and Alzarri can't decide whether to flick it or go through with the pull. Indecision costs him, as the shot comes off all wrong, and the ball loops up weakly, dropping straight into the fielder's zone with barely any distance to cover. Rohit Sharma swoops across from deep square leg and takes a fine catch. West Indies are 385/7 with 15 balls remaining.

47.20

Full on the leg stump. Joseph rocks back and knocks it back to the bowler.

47.21wd

WIDE! Fires one more down leg, on a length. Joseph misses the flick and KL Rahul collects the ball to his left. He goes up in an appeal for caught behind, but that doesn't influence the umpire one bit.

OUT! TAKEN SUPERBLY IN THE DEEP! Shamar Joseph strikes, and there is a hush of silence in Guwahati. Joseph bangs this into the pitch, just outside off. Virat Kohli sways away from the line of it and upper cuts it, but does not get the elevation he wanted. It flies towards third man, where Sherfane Rutherford moves to his left and grabs it. He takes a couple of steps to balance himself, realises he is still going to go over the ropes. He flicks the ball up in the air and comes back to complete the catch. The third umpire sees the replay and it confirms that it is a fair catch. India are 320/2, chasing 406 runs.

Has Rutherford caught it cleanly? The decision is sent upstairs for an umpire's review. Kohli is trudging off already, but he is asked to stay until the verdict is passed. One angle is not conclusive and the umpire requests another. And it is deemed a clean catch as Rutherford's legs weren't in contact with the ropes while holding the ball in hand.

CENTURY FOR ROHIT SHARMA! Number 45 brings up hundred number 35 in ODI cricket, and there are scenes of pure celebration at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. This is Rohit's fourth ODI century against West Indies, and there is history attached too. He plundered a mammoth 152 on this very ground, against this very opposition, back in 2018, also while chasing a big total. This time, India are chasing a total way more than that, but they are very much bossing this up now. He completes the milestone with a hop and a jog, tapping a length ball into the off side for a single. The crowd erupts, and his teammates are up on their feet back in the dressing room.

We have reached the halfway mark. Despite having over 400, India are absolutely cruising along in this chase, with both openers making it look easy. Shubman Gill has already notched up a hundred, while Rohit Sharma is just one run away from his milestone. West Indies are running out of answers here.

FOUR! Each shot gets better than the previous one. This is sublime batting from the Indian skipper. 250 comes for India! Shoulders dropping for the West Indies players. Pitched fuller and in front of the stumps, Shubman Gill stays compact and drills it gun-barrel straight down the ground, to the left of mid on for a delicious boundary.

24.54

FOUR! Pure artistry! Not all that full from Seales, around off, Shubman Gill leans forward, plays with a straight bat and unleashes a crisp cover drive into the mid off and cover gap for a boundary.

24.40

A touch full and outside off, Gill drives it to cover-point. Rohit tries to steal a single, but Gill screams 'No' send him back.

24.34

FOUR! Off the inside edge. Luck favors the brave, they say. Back of a length, nipping back into the batter. Shubman Gill tries to drive it straight down the ground but the ball wobbles in, takes the inside edge and shoots over the stumps and to the left of the keeper before racing to the deep fine leg fence.

24.26

SIX! Absolutely majestic! Into the slot, on the stumps, Shubman Gill swings across the line and marvellously dismisses it over deep mid-wicket for a six. 79 meters away into the crowd.

FOUR! Sloppy work from Shamar Joseph, and Hope certainly won't be pleased with that effort. Short and outside off, looking like a googly, and Rohit waits back to hammer it away to deep backward point. Shamar comes charging across to his left from deep cover, but rather than diving, opts to block it with his leg, only for the ball to cannon off and spin away to the fence. Rohit moves to 99!

23.44

FOUR! How easily done! Overpitched by Lawes, outside off, Rohit Sharma carves it through the cover and point gap for a boundary. No protection there in the deep and the ball speeds away.

21.31

DROPPED! Keacy Carty with a cardinal sin as he has put down a massive chance. Short around the middle stump line, and this one grips a touch on the way back in. Rohit rocks onto the back foot for the pull, a fraction early into the shot, and ends up getting it off the toe end of the bat. Carty, stationed at deep square leg for precisely that opportunity, dives forward and gets both hands to it, only to see the chance burst out of his grasp. Lawes drops to his haunches in disbelief at the other end. Only time will tell how costly that drop will be for the Windies. One run taken.

CENTURY FOR SHUBMAN GILL! The Indian skipper goes back-to-back to notch his 11th ODI century, and this one arrives off just 62 balls. He is batting in a different stratosphere altogether, making a habit of turning starts into massive scores. The milestone comes with a gracious flick through the mid-wicket gap, perfectly bisecting the deep mid-wicket and deep square leg fielders for a boundary. Just a gentle raise of his bat to acknowledge the applause, and he gets a warm hug from Rohit, who is inching towards a century of his own. Still, a very long way to go, but he has set up a superb platform for his side.

India have smashed 96 runs in the 11-20 over phase. And they are well ahead of their opponents at 188/0 in 20 overs. At the same stage, West Indies were 158/2. West Indies desperately need a wicket here.

Drinks Break! Rohit and Gill have helped India to get off to a blistering start in this historically mammoth run chase. So far the bowling from West Indies has been strictly ordinary, with dew starting to settle in gradually. Both the Indian openers have literally dined on anything remotely loose. But it's still a long, long way to go as India still require 285 runs to win. The tourists will desperately try to get a wicket or two as quickly as possible to slow things down a bit. And in such chases, one or two quick wickets are enough to derail the whole momentum. India, on the other hand, will have to keep attacking with no other option to overhaul this target. All things said, this has been a superb batting track. Keemo Paul is back on. He was smashed for 17 runs in his only over so far. He replaces Shamar Joseph.

A slight appeal for LBW, but not entertained by the umpire. Only Seales looks interested. Possibly going down leg or missing leg stump on height. On a back of a length, angled around the leg stump, Rohit Sharma looks to work it into the leg side but plays over the wrong line and is hit on the thigh pad. Don't think there was bat involved. And indeed. The ball in fact hit Rohit's back thigh pad and the Ball Tracking later shows it would have missed the leg stump on height as well.

4.50

Nagging length, outside off, blocked into covers off the back foot.

4.40

BEATEN! How has that missed the off pole? Pitched fuller than a length this time, in the channel and just moving away a shade. Rohit Sharma looks to loft it down the ground but gets beaten by the away movement. The ball whistles past the outside edge and flirts with the off pole on its way to the keeper.

4.30

Swing and a miss! Seales spots Rohit jumping down the track to whack it over mid off, and bangs in a bumper outside off. Rohit goes through his shot but the ball springs over his angled bat.

Good gas on this one. Hammered short at 142.3 kph, angled into the bodyline while extracting fair bit of bounce. Rohit Sharma is rushed on the pull shot and misses to connect entirely. It lobs off his body, left arm perhaps and drops wide of the short fine leg fielder.

3.52

FOUR! So nearly chopped on! Luck favours Gill here. On a back of a length, outside the off stump line. Shubman Gill looks to cut it square on the off side, but gets a massive inside edge and the ball bounces past the stumps before rifling towards the deep fine leg fence. Perhaps the line was too close to cut and it skid through the urface too. So 8 runs off the first over.

A fumble and India are off the mark, so does Rohit. Back of a length, shaping away, outside off, Rohit taps it off the back foot to the right of the backward point fielder where a slight fumble allows him to dash off for a single.

Rohit Sharma is not happy with something. It was probably the smoke going off behind the bowler, just after he delivered the ball.

Good carry and Seales is on the money! Jayden gets the ball to swing away from the batter, on a good length, but wide outside off. Rohit lets it through to the keeper.

Excellent work in the deep by Rohit! Saves a certain boundary. Tossed up outside off, there to be hit, and Jangoo dances down the track to loft it towards long on. He does not quite middle it, though, and almost holes out. Drinks Break! It has been smooth sailing for West Indies from the start. Even after losing Campbell for 101, the run rate has hardly dipped, with captain Shai Hope settling in nicely at the crease and eyeing a century of his own now. Amir Jangoo, meanwhile, has been exceptionally fluent, unleashing a wide array of shots, a sign of just how good this surface is for batting, though the skill on display deserves its due credit too. The Indian pacers have gone for plenty, and the spinners have found it just as hard to penetrate, but they will need to keep manufacturing chances to claw their way back into this game. Even 400 looks a real possibility for the tourists if they keep going at this scoring rate. Auqib Nabi (3-0-35-0) is back into the attack now, replacing Kuldeep Yadav. He was very expensive and couldn't control his lines and lengths. But can he give a breakthrough for the Men in Blue in his second spell? Let's see. Looks like John Campbell is struggling with the heat, and the umpires have called for DRINKS. Campbell has a wet towel over his head to cool down, but his batting has been pretty explosive. He has raced to 83 off 51 balls and will eye a big hundred, with a lot of overs left. Shai Hope is playing the supporting role well, but they'll know they can't repeat the middle-overs mistakes from the last match. India were in a similar situation in the first ODI, but they clawed their way back, and will be hopeful that Kuldeep Yadav can repeat his heroics. Still, it will have to be a collective effort, as this is looking like a batting paradise.

Shai Hope goes for a booming drive through cover, but mistimes off the inside half of the bat and chips it to the left of the bowler. OUT! TAKEN! India have their first wicket, and Naman Dhir has pulled off a terrific low catch at point. Prasidh Krishna gets the ball to hold up after pitching full around off, catching Keacy Carty by surprise as he goes for the drive. He is forced into a miscued shot, slicing it towards point, where Dhir throws himself forward and gets both hands underneath it just above the turf. There is a lengthy check from the third umpire, with one of the angles suggesting the ball may have made the slightest contact with the ground. However, there is no clear evidence to overturn the decision to Not Out. Carty is clearly unhappy with the verdict, but his stay comes to an end. West Indies are 37/1.

An umpire's review for a fair catch. Dhir with an absolutely stunning catching attempt there at cover-point. But has he got his fingers wrapped around the ball cleanly? The third umpire deems it a clean catch, with his fingers underneath the ball cleanly. He asks for another angle, but there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that the ball is grounded. So the decision goes in favour of the bowling side. Disappointment for Carty. OUT loads on the giant screen.

All set to get underway in Guwahati, the Gateway to North East India. The two umpires punctually make their way out to the middle. Right after them, the Indian players spring out confidently and take their respective fielding positions. It is a fresh opening pair for the West Indies in the form of John Campbell and Keacy Carty. Daren Ganga on air informs us that this is the 12th opening combination for the Windies in this World Cup cycle. Right then, two slips in place, with Prasidh Krishna ready to steam in with the new ball. Campbell is on strike. Off we go...

Ruturaj Gaikwad (India) - On his form since that hundred against South Africa last year, Gaikwad says that was a long time ago, with plenty of cricket in between, including the IPL, played across different conditions and different batting positions. He admits there is nervousness returning to the international level after a gap, but he feels the last game was a step forward, just getting out there and settling in for a while. On dealing with limited opportunities, he keeps his approach simple, saying it comes down to giving his best whenever the chance to play for India arrives, rather than dwelling on when the next opportunity might come. He concedes it can be tough to process at times, but says the focus has to stay on enjoying the honour of playing for the country. On adapting to batting at number 4, Gaikwad describes it as a real adjustment, having opened in over a hundred first class innings before this. He then explains that middle-order batting at the international level brings its own demands, from rotating strike to picking the right option at the right time, unlike the powerplay where fielders are in, and boundaries come easier. He says the key is adapting to the situation while still backing his own strengths.

PITCH REPORT - Murali Kartik is inspecting the conditions in Guwahati. Starts by describing the conditions as warm and humid, with more heat still to come, in what he calls a high dew zone. He notes that the square boundaries measure 61 meters to one side and 69 meters to the other, and it is 74 meters straight down the ground. Details that both ODIs played here have produced big totals, in excess of 300. Daren Ganga joins him and calls it a strong batting surface with a history of high scores. He points out more grass on this pitch compared to Trivandrum, which could offer the seamers extra lateral movement. He also adds that the hard, red soil base means the ball should still come on nicely for the batters. Ganga also expects bowlers to target the shorter side to claw back some advantage. Adds that dew will turn heavily in the chasing team's favour later in the innings. Kartik then concludes by relaying the curator's claim that dew has been managed and should not be a major factor.

West Indies (Playing XI) - John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Shai Hope (C/WK), Amir Jangoo, Sherfane Rutherford (In place of Jewel Andrew), Roston Chase, Keemo Paul (In place of Justin Greaves), Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph (In place of Matthew Forde), Jayden Seales, Vitel Lawes (In place of Gudakesh Motie).

India (Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul (WK), Naman Dhir, Auqib Nabi (In place of Nitish Kumar Reddy and On Debut), Kuldeep Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, Prasidh Krishna.

The captain of West Indies - Shai Hope says that they would have definitely bowled first as well. Adds that the coin-toss is a 50-50 always, but here they have another opportunity to put some runs on the board and give their bowlers something to defend. Hope mentions that it is about identifying the areas they need to improve and finding ways to get better. According to him, it is about going out there and playing good cricket and doing the right things. Hope says that the surface looks good and they need to assess quickly and see how to score at the back end. He also informs that they have made four changes but jokingly says he is not going to run his head through them and you can just see the graphics.

The skipper of India - Shubman Gill, on the surface, says there's a bit more grass and that it's a bit patchier as well. So he thinks it will offer a lot more to the pacers. On the last game, Gill is pleased with how his side responded, having come under pressure through the first 20 to 25 overs before fighting back well. He points out that conditions in Guwahati are even more humid and hotter, which he sees as a fresh test for his fast bowlers. On fielding standards, he agrees that intensity in the field during the middle overs is what decides matches in this format. Also admits it is an area his side could have sharpened up in the last game. He is hopeful for an improvement this time. On the top order, Gill is happy with how the batting group is shaping up, adding that Rohit looked to be finding good touch as well, which he hopes carries into another strong showing. On the team changes and combinations, he informs that Auqib Nabi is set to make his ODI debut and he is swapped in for Nitish Kumar Reddy.

TOSS - It's time for the coin-flip as both captains make their way out to the middle, with the ever-energetic Ravi Shastri presenting the toss. Shubman Gill gives it a flick and Shai Hope calls 'Heads' but it comes down as 'Tails'. India have elected to BOWL first.

Just in - A special moment for Auqib Nabi who has received his maiden international cap from KL Rahul. The pacer from Jammu and Kashmir is now set to make his ODI debut, marking a memorable moment in his international career.

West Indies need to build on their starts - West Indies have plenty to take from the way they began the opening game, with their openers putting together a strong platform and Justin Greaves going on to score his maiden ODI century. However, he has been ruled out of this game due to a calf injury, leaving a big hole to fill. The challenge now is for the middle order to capitalise on those starts and carry the momentum through the innings, while the bowlers will need to find a way to put India under sustained pressure. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

India aim to seal the series - The hosts will take confidence from their start to the series and will be keen to carry that momentum into a different venue. Shubman Gill's side have several players looking to make the most of their opportunities, while Virat Kohli will also be looking to build on his century in the opener after reaching the landmark of 15,000 ODI runs. India will be keen to put together another all-round performance and take an unassailable lead.

Round two in Guwahati - Welcome to the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, where India and West Indies meet for the second ODI of the three-match series. India come into the contest with a 1-0 lead after an emphatic eight-wicket win in Thiruvananthapuram, and they now have the opportunity to wrap up the series with a game to spare. West Indies, meanwhile, must find a response to keep the series alive after letting a strong start slip away in the opener.

... MATCH DAY ...

East bound - The caravan has moved to Guwahati, with India keen to put the series to bed before it moves on to New Chandigarh, while West Indies look to force a decider. A win at Barsapara Cricket Stadium would give India a 14th straight ODI series win over the Windies. It would also be a 5th straight series defeat in the format for the Men in Maroon, who failed to secure automatic qualification for next year's ODI World Cup and are set to feature in the Qualifiers. Class up top - The top order simply hasn't had an off day in a while. Shubman Gill has crossed fifty in 7 of his 9 ODI innings in 2026 and will walk into this one full of confidence after his century in the opener. Rohit Sharma is holding down his end nicely too, while Virat Kohli's 55th ODI century took him past 15,000 ODI runs. More tellingly, his 9 sixes in that innings were a career high for a single ODI knock, suggesting a continued evolution in his strike-rate profile at 37. Guwahati has been a happy hunting ground for this pair before. When India last faced the Windies here in 2018, both Rohit and Kohli hit hundreds as India chased down 323 with ease. Kuldeep finds his mojo - Kuldeep Yadav is the story coming into this one. Having played just 5 of India's 10 ODIs this year, he finally got his chance in the opener and responded with a four-wicket haul that sparked India's turnaround. Mohammed Siraj did not feature in the series opener, which raised a few eyebrows given his recent lack of rhythm and the fact that he is the kind of bowler who benefits from regular game time. Whether he can find a place in the side remains to be seen. Nitish Kumar Reddy continues to be the player India are looking at as a backup option for Hardik Pandya, given his fitness concerns. Taking the new ball did not quite work for him in the opener, but he did a decent job when he returned for his later spells and will be hoping to build on that here. Need more with the bat - The Windies' top order has shown it can match India stride for stride, and the 135-run opening stand in the opener was proof of that. The bigger question is what happens once that platform is set, with the middle order having struggled to build on strong starts. Shai Hope remains their most dependable batter, but he has been short of runs lately and will be looking to draw on all his experience. Justin Greaves, batting in a new role as opener, thrived with a maiden ODI century, but his availability remains a concern after picking up a right-leg issue. If he is not fit enough, that could open the door for Sherfane Rutherford to come in. Fixing the attack - Dropping Gill on 11 proved very costly for the Windies, but the bigger concern was that they lacked potency with the new ball. Matthew Forde's gentle floaters did not pose any kind of threat, and in hindsight they would have been better off starting Alzarri Joseph with the new ball, sharing the attack with Jayden Seales. Whether they make that switch remains to be seen. Shamar Joseph was seen on the sidelines wearing a mask, which could mean he is under the weather. If that is the case, his availability for the next game will be worth keeping an eye on. India's Kuldeep Yadav showed the worth of having a wrist spinner in the side, while West Indies' own wrist spinner, Vitel Lawes, sat on the sidelines watching on. Having Lawes in the side could have given West Indies the X factor they were missing, and his presence in Guwahati could make a real difference. Form (Last 5 completed ODIs, most recent first) - IND - WLLWW | WI - LWLLL. Conditions check - Two men's ODIs have been played here before, with India winning both. Men's ODI cricket returns to Guwahati for the first time since 2023, though the venue hosted matches at last year's Women's ODI World Cup. Those games saw run-scoring prove a little challenging, but the IPL earlier this year offered much better batting conditions. Chasing could once again be the preferred option, although there could be more help on offer for the new ball under lights than in the afternoon. Who are you backing to come out on top?
